Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. Japan has issued a tsunami advisory after a powerful earthquake struck an area off Russia's east coast. NPR's Anthony Kuhn reports that tsunami warnings and watches have also been issued for Alaska, Hawaii and parts of the US West Coast.
Anthony Kuhn
The US Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 8.7. The epicenter was 11 miles below the Earth's surface, 78 miles southeast of Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky City in Russia's Far East. Russia's Tass news agency reported residents running into the street as buildings shook and power and cell phone service went down. Japan's weather agency predicted waves nearly 10ft high, which were expected to hit by 10am Authorities ordered the evacuation of coastal residents from the island of Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south. Japan's government has set up a task force to monitor the situation and organize a response. Anthony Kuhn, NPR News.

President Trump continues to field questions about his falling out with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. NPR's Tamara Keith reports on Trump's responses during his trip home from Scotland.
Donald Trump
Trump had been friends with Epstein before the sex trafficking allegations came to light. He says the friendship soured over Epstein poaching staff from his Mar A Lago resort on Air Force One. Reporters pressed for more details, asking if those employees had been young women.
And the answer is yes, they were. Yes, they were young women. What did they do in the spa? Yeah, people that work in the spa. I have a great spa, one of the best spas in the world at Mar a Lago. And people were taken out of the spa hired by him. In other words, gone.
Trump said he told Epstein to stop taking his employees, and when he did it again, quote, I said, out of here. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

Deputy attorney general and former Trump attorney Emil Bovey has received Senate confirmation as a federal appeals court judge. Three whistleblowers testified that Bovey flouts the law, a claim he denies. Investigators are providing more information on the gunman who killed four people in a Manhattan office building on Monday before taking his own life. Steve Futterman reports from Los Angeles.
Steve Futterman
Shane Tamura grew up here in the LA area. He was a running back on his high school football team. Mason Thomas was a teammate.
Mason Thomas
My heart just dropped when I saw that it was Shane Police in New.
Steve Futterman
York say Tamura claimed to be suffering from cte, a brain disorder often linked to repetitive hits, and that was why he appeared to be targeting the National Football League office located inside the building. Thomas never saw anyone but a regular teammate.
Mason Thomas
I can't even like, think of a time of him, like, raising his voice like he was very gentle.
Steve Futterman
Tamura never played in the NFL. Most recently, he had been working as a security guard in Las Vegas. In a note recovered by police, Tamura said, please study my brain.

Steve Futterman in Los Angeles, this is npr. Hipmup mogul Sean Combs is asking a judge to release him on a $50 million bond while he awaits sentencing in October. Combs was convicted of prostitution related offenses. He was found not guilty of racketeering, sex trafficking. The judge overseeing his case declined to release Combs after the verdict, saying he is a danger to the community. Members of Congress are considering a Republican bill to change the name of the Kennedy center for Performing Arts to honor President Trump. As NPR's Neta Ulaby reports, the proposal may not get the support that Trump wants.
Neta Ulaby
Renaming the Kennedy center after the current president has been under discussion ever since Trump took over the organization's board of trustees in February. Republicans recently voted as part of the Big Beautiful bill to dedicate more than $250 million towards improving the modernist cream colored building perched on the Potomac river that opened in 1971. But renaming the Kennedy center after President Trump or its opera house after his wife, may run afoul of the laws that created it. The new legislation, introduced as the Make Entertainment Great Again act by Congressman Bob Onder, is expected to struggle to find enough votes to pass. Neta Ulibi, NPR News.
