News, I'm Dale Willman. In a post on social media, President Trump has announced imports from India will face a 25% tariff starting this Friday. As NPR's Tamara Keith reports. This is part of a series of announcements ahead of Trump Trump's August 1st tariffs deadline.

For weeks, administration officials have been hinting a trade deal with India was just around the corner. And Trump starts off his post describing India as a friend. But he goes on to complain that in addition to having high tariffs, India has, quote, the most strenuous and obnoxious non monetary trade barriers of any country. Another grievance, Trump says India buys the majority of its military equipment and large quantities of oil from Russia. Trump said there would be penalties for that to the 25% tariff he's imposing. The rate is barely changed from the one Trump first said in April on what he called Liberation Day. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

The U.S. economy expanded at a 3% annual rate in the second quarter after shrinking during the first three months of the year. President Trump quickly posted that it's now time for interest rates to come down. The Federal Reserve has held rates steady for months over fears of a possible recession, but the Fed announces its latest decision on rates later today. UCLA has agreed to a $6.4 million settlement in the lawsuit brought by three Jewish students and a professor. They allege the university failed to prevent anti Semitic behavior that occurred during campus protests last year. From member station KQED in San Francisco, Azul Dahlstrom Ekman has our reports.

The lawsuit focuses on pro Palestinian protests at UCLA last year. The plaintiff said they were denied access to campus buildings by activists in an encampment, effectively creating what they called a Jew exclusion zone. The school, they said, also barred campus police from interfering. Jordan Varberg is an attorney for the plaintiffs. He says the settlement sets a precedent.

That if you allow this sort of anti Semitic exclusion on your own campus, you're going to face consequences from a federal court and from plaintiffs like our clients.

The gunman also had a revolver that he had legally purchased back in Arizona, but that gun was left in his car. Four people were killed in that shooting. You're listening to NPR News. German Olympic gold medalist Laura Dallmeier has died while attempting to summit a peak in northern Pakistan. She was hit by falling rocks on Monday, but rescuers could not confirm her death until today. Poor weather, weather has made it difficult for teams to recover the body. A rescue was launched on Monday after Dallmeyer's climbing partner sent a distress signal. Her partner was injured but made it back to camp this year. The rise of maha, the Trump administration's Make America Healthy Again movement has fueled a slew of state bills aiming to restrict food additives, especially synthetic dyes. Some preservatives, some including in Texas, Arizona and Utah, have passed, creating a patchwork of different regulations. Food manufacturers say it's impractical to make different recipes and packaging for products in different states. Many experts say that may eventually force the federal government, the Food and Drug Administration, to place stricter limits on many food dyes and additives. Yukinoguchi, NPR News.
