Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell speaking this hour about the central bank's decision to keep the key interest rates steady for now despite President Trump's pressure to lower borrowing costs. More on this from NPR's Scott Horsley.
Scott Horsley
The central bank left its benchmark interest rate unchanged this afternoon. The decision affects the cost that businesses and consumers pay to borrow money to buy a car, build a factory or carry a balance on a credit card. Inflation is still somewhat higher than the Fed would like, and President Trump's tariffs could put more upward pressure on prices. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate remains low, so most Fed policymakers are not in a hurry to cut borrowing costs. Two members of the Fed's rate setting committee dissented, however, saying they would have preferred to cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point. Investors think the full committee is likely to approve a rate cut at the next Fed meeting in September. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

Republicans in the Texas House of Representatives have released a proposed redistricting map that seeks to fulfill President Trump's desire to add more Republican congressional seats in the state. Houston Public Media senior politics reporter Andrew Schneider has been following the story for.
Andrew Schneider
Us from the from the map that I've been able to look at, it looks like there are at least five seats that the Republicans are looking to pick up. The main ones are are in the south of the state in the Rio Grande Valley, which has been trending Republican for some time, as well as a few in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Also in the Houston area, we have a few seats that have been moved around geographically, so Democrats will likely be able to hold them, but they will be running in unfamiliar territory.

New district lines in Texas and elsewhere could play a key role in determining which party controls a US House after next year's midterms. The GOP gambit in Texas has led to Democrats Democrats talking of doing their own new gerrymanders in states like California and New York. But there are legal and state constitutional hurdles in those places that would make the efforts more difficult. Aid organizations say Israel is still restricting how much food and aid they can bring into Gaza. NPR's Emily Feng is following developments.
Ross Smith
Israel's military has said there is no widespread hunger in Gaza and that they are letting in aid. But the World Food Program's director of emergencies, Ross Smith, says the Israeli military is only letting in about half, half of their trucks carrying food.
Andrew Schneider
And what we are lacking is follow.
Villa Marx
Through on the ground.
Andrew Schneider
It means faster clearances and approvals for trucks. It means soldiers are not present near humanitarian relief convoys or distribution points.
Ross Smith
Israel says about 100 to more than 200 trucks of food have entered Gaza a day starting on Monday. But Smith says the United nations aid system in Gaza needs about 500 trucks of food a day to address hunger levels.

That's Emily FANG reporting. It's NPR. President Trump announced on Truth Social that the U.S. will impose a 25% tariff on India starting August 1st. He said there would be an additional penalty for India for buying military equipment and energy from Russia. The administration has been teasing for weeks that a trade deal with India is around the corner. The announcement also comes as Trump moved up a deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine and has threatened to impose economic penalties on its trading partners. Tens of thousands of fans converged on the English city of Birmingham, the home city of Ozzy Osbourne. Villa Marx reports It was a fitting final tribute to the heavy metal megastar who died last week.

The Black Sabbath singer's coffin was driven along Birmingham's Broad Street, a route that saw the cortege pass at a bridge named for the band Osbourne helped found nearly six decades ago. A local group, the Boston Brass Band, followed six police motorcycles during the procession, performing Black Sabbath classics from albums going back decades. Chants arose frequently before his family, including visibly emotional wife Sharon, paused at the Black Sabbath bridge to add their own flowers to other tributes left there. In the days since his death, Osbourne's fame expanded far beyond his musical career after his family appeared on an eponymous reality TV series that became MTV's most watched programming in the early 2000s. For NPR News, I'm Villain marks again.

In a significant move affecting both businesses and consumers, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell announced that the central bank would maintain its benchmark interest rates unchanged. Despite President Trump's public demands to lower borrowing costs, the Fed remains cautious.
"Inflation is still somewhat higher than the Fed would like," Powell stated at [00:51], emphasizing the ongoing challenges. Additionally, President Trump's implementation of tariffs has introduced potential upward pressure on prices, complicating the Fed’s decision-making process.
The unemployment rate remains low, contributing to the Fed's reluctance to reduce rates prematurely. However, not all committee members agree. Two dissenting voices expressed a desire to cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point, hinting at potential shifts in future policy. Investors are anticipating a possible rate cut in September’s meeting, suggesting dynamic economic adjustments ahead.

Republicans in the Texas House of Representatives have released a new redistricting map aimed at increasing their representation in Congress. Senior politics reporter Andrew Schneider provides an in-depth analysis of the proposed changes.
"From the map that I've been able to look at, it looks like there are at least five seats that the Republicans are looking to pick up," Schneider explains at [01:45]. The focus areas include the Rio Grande Valley, which has been trending Republican, as well as strategic regions in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston areas.
While some seats in Houston have been redrawn in ways that might allow Democrats to retain them, these districts will present new challenges as candidates navigate unfamiliar territories. The strategic redistricting could play a pivotal role in the upcoming midterms, potentially tipping the balance of power in the US House.
The newly drawn district lines in Texas are expected to be a decisive factor in determining the controlling party in the US House following next year's midterms. In response, Democrats are contemplating their own gerrymandering efforts in states like California and New York. However, these initiatives face significant legal and constitutional hurdles, making successful implementation more challenging.

Amid ongoing conflicts, aid organizations report that Israel is limiting the influx of food and humanitarian assistance into Gaza.
"Israel's military has said there is no widespread hunger in Gaza and that they are letting in aid," Israel asserted. However, Ross Smith, the World Food Program's Director of Emergencies, counters this claim.
"The Israeli military is only letting in about half of their trucks carrying food," Smith points out at [02:48]. The UN estimates that Gaza requires approximately 500 food trucks daily to adequately address hunger levels, yet only about 100 to 200 trucks are being permitted each day.
Andrew Schneider adds at [03:02], "What we are lacking is follow-through on the ground." This includes expedited clearances and approvals for aid trucks and ensuring that soldiers do not impede humanitarian relief efforts. The discrepancy between reported and actual aid delivery highlights a critical gap in addressing the needs of Gaza's population.

In a bold economic move, President Trump declared on Truth Social that the United States will impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting August 1st. This decision is part of a broader strategy to pressure India regarding its trade and military dealings.
"There would be an additional penalty for India for buying military equipment and energy from Russia," Trump stated, signaling a hardline stance on international trade and alliances. This announcement comes amidst weeks of speculation about a forthcoming trade deal between the U.S. and India.
Furthermore, Trump has accelerated a deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine and has threatened to apply economic penalties on Russia's trading partners if demands are not met. These actions reflect an intensifying approach to foreign policy and economic strategy under the Trump administration.
