Terms apply details@capitalone.com Live from NPR News, I'm Jeanine Herbst. Ahead of a deadline President Trump set for tomorrow, he signed executive orders tonight placing new tariffs on imports from dozens of countries, ranging from 10% on all imports from all countries, up to 40% for trans shipment. That's when countries send their goods to the US through other countries to avoid applicable duties. These new steep duties are set to go into effect in seven days. Some countries already negotiated deals, but Trump says in his EO those who haven't face higher tariffs. And Trump says he will raise tariffs on Canadian imports from 25% to 35%. Meanwhile, Trump also says US foreign envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Russia in the coming days as Trump calls for an end to Russia. Russia's more than three year old war on Ukraine.
Donald Trump
I think what Russia is doing is very sad. A lot of Russians are dying. You have a lot of Russians. More Russians are dying. But Russians are dying. Ukrainians are dying. You know, the United States isn't really involved in that war.

Witkoff is in Israel today, where he met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Gaza and the food crisis in the enclave. He travels to Gaza tomorrow to see an aid distribution site as anger toward Israel grows over the hunger crisis. GAZ officials say dozens have died from starvation in recent weeks, including children. The Trump administration says more than 150,000 federal workers who took the government's deferred resignation offer. That number, first reported by the Washington Post, offers a glimpse into the scale of Trump's overhaul of the federal workforce. So far. NPR's Andrea Hsu reports.

Until now, there had been only piecemeal information about how many federal employees had taken the Trump administration's offer to resign from their jobs in exchange for pay and benefits through the government. Federal fall 150,000 would represent roughly 7% of the government's civilian workforce. And still the total number of people who have left the government either because they resigned voluntarily or were forced out remains unknown. The nonprofit Partnership for Public Service has come up with its own estimate, based on official announcements, news reports and limited data from agencies. That group found the largest reductions have been at the Treasury Department, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Defense. Andrea Hsu and PR News in Texas.

Hundreds of people lined up for a chance to speak before a special committee of the state legislature today over local officials responses to the deadly July 4th flooding in Texas Hill country that left more than 130 people dead. Blaze Gainey from member station KUT has more.

Lawmakers are supposed to be grabbing and understanding recommendations and eventually putting forward solutions during this special session they're currently in. So they're expected to write up laws on disaster prevention preparedness. They're looking at things like more money for early warning systems and river gauges, rules for camps and also standards for local emergency officials.

Blaze Gainey reporting. This is NPR News. New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show vaccination rates among children in kindergarten dropped again last school year. NPR's Maria Godoy has more.
Maria Godoy
During the 2024-2025 school year, vaccination rates among kindergartners decreased for all reported VAC to the prior year. Nationwide, the percentage of kindergartners vaccinated against measles, mumps and Rubella fell to 92.5%. That's below the 95% vaccination rate considered necessary to protect communities against measles outbreaks. The CDC says coverage against measles among kindergartners declined in more than half of US States. That slide occurred even as the US Experiences the highest number of measles cases in in more than 30 years. Meanwhile, the number of kindergartners with exemptions from one or more required vaccines rose in 36 states, plus the District of Columbia. Maria Godoy, NPR News.

Construction on President Trump's $200 million ballroom at the White House that he's been talking about for years is scheduled to start in September. Right now, the biggest event space at the White House is the East Room, but that only seats about 200 guests for dinner, so major events are often held in large tents outdoors. The White House says the new structure will seat up to 650 people and that the cost would be covered by President Trump and other donors. U.S. futures contracts are trading lower at this hour. Dow futures down about 0.2%. I'm Jeanine Herbst, NPR News, in Washington.
