Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. Special Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff and U.S. ambassador Mike Huckabee plan to visit the Gaza Strip today to inspect food distribution efforts. Witkoff and Huckabee are in the Middle east amid pressure on Israel to ramp up food distribution to Palestinians. Here's White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt.
Caroline Levitt
The special envoy and the ambassador will brief the president immediately after their visit to approve a final plan for food and aid distribution into the region. And we will provide more details for all of you once that plan is approved and agreed on by the president of the United States.

Meanwhile, President Trump says Witkoff will also travel to Russia soon. Trump is threatening to slap new sanctions on Moscow in about a week if it does not soon reach a ceasefire. In Ukraine, President Trump has signed an executive order that updates his tariffs on goods from 68 nations and the European Union. Trump also plans to raise tariffs on imports from Canada from 25% to 35%, with exemptions for goods covered under an existing trade deal. He's granting a 90 day extension of a prior trade agreement with Mexico in order to allow time for more negotiation. Democrats are debating the future of their party and ways to fight low approval ratings. NPR's Stephen Fowler has more on some of the messaging changes as the party.

Tries to move on from 2024's defeats. Some Democrats are switching up the form and format of their pitch to voters. Some Democratic officeholders are doing lengthy appearances on popular podcasts that cater towards people who avoid politics and and while Trump has drastically restructured the government, some Democrats say the party should focus on rebuilding things that do work. Much of the record unpopularity the Democratic Party faces is from within, driven by disenchantment and frustrations among people who may ultimately end up supporting the party in the midterms. US Futures are lower in after hours trading on Wall Street. On Asia Pacific market shares are also down. This is nice. Relatives of Virginia Giuffre say they were shocked to hear President Trump say their loved one was stolen from Mar? A Lago. Trump says Giuffre was one of the many women poached from his Palm beach resort by late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in the 1990s. Giuffre was an Epstein victim who committed suicide earlier this year. Her family issued a statement after Justice Department officials visited Epstein's ex partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, who's serving a 20 year prison sentence for sex trafficking. Director, playwright and visual artist Robert Wilson has died at the age of 83. Wilson worked with artists from Philip Glass to Lady Gaga. Jeff London has this appreciation.

The Texas born artist once told the New York Times, quote, to see someone try to act natural on stage seems so artificial. If you accept it as being something artificial, in the long run, it seems more natural for me. And Robert Wilson's productions filled with visual interest took their time to unfold from his 12 hour life in Times of Joseph Stalin, which was wordless, to his five hour collaboration with Philip Glass, Einstein on the Beach. Other collaborators included Tom Waits, Lou Reed and Lady Gaga. Wilson ran the Watermill center and arts incubator on Long Island. For NPR News, I'm Jeff London in New York.
