Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. Travelers from certain countries will have to pay a bond of up to $15,000 in order to enter the United States. As NPR's Tovia Smith, the Trump administration says it is a pilot program that's meant to ensure that those visitors do not overstay their visas.
Tovia Smith
It's not yet known which countries will be subject to the new requirement, but it'll be those with the highest rate of overstaying visas, as ranked by DHS data. A public notice in the Federal Register explaining the new rule says it will address a clear national security threat of overstays and lax screening. Visitors will have to enter the US through specific airports and put down between 5,000 and 15,000 doll, which they'd get back if and when they leave on time. The new restrictions are likely to make travel to the US Too costly for many. They're set to go into effect later this month and will remain for a year as officials evaluate how they're working. Tovia Smith, NPR News.

In Texas, more than 50 Democratic legislators have fled the state to prevent passage of a redistricting map that could give Republicans five more seats in Congress. From member station wbur, Allie Germaning spoke with two of those Democrats.
Allie Germaning
Representatives Anna Hernandez and Armando Walley are in Boston for the National Conference of State Legislatures. Wally says they're not afraid of Governor Greg Abbott's threats to remove them from office for not showing up to vote.
Shea Stevens
Our constituents expect us to fight. They don't expect us to lie down. I'm not worried about any legal political ramifications because the people have elected us to do what we're doing today.
Allie Germaning
Hernandez says this redistricting attempt should be a warning to other states because it's.
Anna Hernandez
Texas now, but it's going to continue through the rest of the states, and it's to kill our democracy.

Democrats say they're prepared to stay away until at least August 19, the end of the special session. For NPR News, I'm Allie.

Germany, Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered a house arrest for ex President Jair Bolsonaro, who's facing charges of plotting a coup. The court says Bolsonaro violated pretrial restrictions, which already include an ankle bracelet. More from NPR's Carrie Kann.
Carrie Kann
Former President Jair Bolsonaro can no longer leave his home, can speak only with family members and lawyers, and must surrender all cell phones from his Supreme Court. Justice Alexander de Moraes issued the order after what he says was Bolsonaro's violation of pre trial restrictions, including use of social media. Bolsonaro appeared via video on his son's social media account during a support rally in Rio this weekend. Bolsonaro is facing charges of plotting a coup to overturn his election loss and stay in power. President Trump has called Bolsonaro's prosecution a, quote, witch hunt and says he will increase tariffs on Brazilian goods to 50% this week. The US treasury is also sanctioned. Justice Moraes. In a significant policy shift, the Trump administration has introduced a pilot program requiring travelers from certain countries to pay a bond of up to $15,000 to enter the United States. This measure aims to curb visa overstays, which the administration identifies as a national security threat due to insufficient screening processes.
