Live from NPR News. I'm Dale Wilman. President Trump has withdrawn one of his two nominees for the U.S. postal Service's governing board. As NPR's Hansi Lo Wang reports, the move comes as the Postal Service faces an uncertain future under the Trump administration.
Hansi Lo Wang
The White House's press office did not immediately respond to NPR's question about why President Trump withdrew his nomination for John Laval to join the board of governors for the U.S. postal Service, which is a financial supporter of NPR. Last month, the names of both Laval and Trump's still active postal governor nominee Anthony Lomangino were removed from the agenda of a Senate confirmation hearing with no public explanation. In recent months, the Trump administration has sparked concerns that it's determined to take over usps, which Congress set up to be an independent agency decades ago. By next year, Trump is expected to have a chance to nominate a total of five new postal governors who could dominate what is currently a board of mostly nominees of former President Joe Biden. As back to school shopping gets underway, more than a dozen states are offering a sales tax holiday on a number of items. That's because the prices of many everyday goods are expected to increase as new tariffs from the Trump administration go into effect this week. President Trump was golfing in New Jersey this weekend. He spoke with reporters and returning home, explaining what he looks for in new trade deals with key partners.
Donald Trump
Yeah, I'm not looking for leverage. I'm looking for fairness. We want reciprocal as much as possible. Sometimes reciprocal would be too much for them to handle because it would be a much bigger number.

Defense officials from Thailand and Cambodia are meeting in Malaysia today as both countries hope to maintain a ceasefire along their disputed border. A truce was reached last night, a week following some of the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbors in more than a decade. Adam Hancock is following the story from Singapore.
Adam Hancock
These mediation talks will take place in Kuala Lumpur after Thailand requested a neutral venue for the latest round of negotiations. Defense ministers and military leaders from both sides will sit down in the Malaysian capital for the next four days. The talks are part of the ceasefire agreement, which was brokered in late July. It put an end to days of heavy fighting, which left at least 43 people dead and hundreds of thousands displaced. Local media have reported that some residents have started to return to their homes, although many are still living in shelters and waiting for the all clear. Officials from a number of countries across Southeast Asia will also be present at the talks, as well as defence representatives from the US And China. For NPR News, I'm Adam Hancock in Singapore.

A Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian oil depot on the Black Sea has caused a major fire this weekend. Russian officials say the attack occurred near the resort town of Sochi Airport. Officials say all flights into and out of that city were temporarily canceled. And after the attack, Asian stocks closed mixed on Monday trading Japan's Nikkei index fell 1.4%, while Chinese Blue chips were flat. South Korean stocks, meanwhile, rallied, finishing up by 1.1%. Some companies reporting quarterly earnings include Disney and McDonald's. This is NPR News. A volcano has erupted in Russia's Far east for the first time in centuries. And as NPR's Jeff Brumfield reports, the eruption may be related to a massive earthquake that shook the region last week.

The Krasnyynikov volcano is located on the Kamchatka Peninsula. It's been dormant for at least 400 years, according to Russian geologists, but early Sunday morning, it began spewing a massive cloud of ash. Video from Russia's Tass news agency showed the cloud shooting skyward, where it triggered an alert from for planes flying in the region. The eruption took place less than a week after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake shook the ocean off the coast of Kamchatka. Harold Tobin is a seismologist at the University of Washington.
Harold Tobin
It is definitely an interesting coincidence or not coincidence.
Jeff Brumfield
He says it's unlikely the quake caused the eruption, but if the volcano was nearly ready to erupt, it's possible the seismic waves shook something loose. Jeff Brumfiel, NPR News.

The U.N. says at least 68 migrants from Africa died on Sunday and 74 others remain missing after their boat capsized off the coast of Yemen. That boat was carrying at least 154 migrants from Ethiopia. Actor Loni Anderson has died just days before her 80th birthday. She was a star of the hit TV show WKRP in Cincinnati, where she played Jennifer, the receptionist of a fictional radio station in Ohio. She won two Emmy nominations, along with three nominations for a Golden Globe for her performance in the show. Her publicist says she died at a Los Angeles hospital following a prolonged illness. In a significant move affecting the United States Postal Service (USPS), President Donald Trump has withdrawn one of his two nominees for the USPS's governing board. NPR's Hansi Lo Wang reports that the decision surrounds John Laval, one of the nominees intended to support the USPS's governance. The White House has not provided an immediate explanation for this withdrawal. Last month, both John Laval and the still-active nominee Anthony Lomangino saw their names removed from a Senate confirmation hearing agenda without public justification.
This development fuels ongoing concerns about the Trump administration's commitment to maintaining USPS's independence—a crucial agency established by Congress decades ago. With the potential to nominate up to five new postal governors by next year, Trump aims to shift the board's current composition, which predominantly features nominees from former President Joe Biden. The USPS is a vital financial supporter of NPR, raising additional implications for media and public communications.

As back-to-school shopping ramps up across the nation, more than a dozen states are implementing sales tax holidays on various essential items. This initiative comes in response to anticipated price hikes on everyday goods, attributed to newly imposed tariffs by the Trump administration set to take effect this week.
During a golfing outing in New Jersey over the weekend, President Trump addressed reporters about his approach to international trade deals. Emphasizing fairness and reciprocity, Trump stated:
"Yeah, I'm not looking for leverage. I'm looking for fairness. We want reciprocal as much as possible. Sometimes reciprocal would be too much for them to handle because it would be a much bigger number."
— Donald Trump [01:30]
Trump's comments signal a strategic shift towards equitable trade agreements, though the immediate effect of tariffs is expected to increase consumer prices, impacting households nationwide.

In Southeast Asia, defense officials from Thailand and Cambodia convene in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, aiming to sustain a fragile ceasefire along their disputed border. Adam Hancock reports that this meeting follows a recent escalation in conflict, which resulted in at least 43 fatalities and displaced hundreds of thousands.
The mediation talks, lasting four days, are part of a ceasefire agreement brokered in late July after weeks of intense fighting. Thai officials requested a neutral venue to facilitate these negotiations, which now include participation from multiple Southeast Asian countries, as well as defense representatives from the United States and China.
Adam Hancock adds:
"Some residents have started to return to their homes, although many are still living in shelters and waiting for the all clear."
— Adam Hancock [02:00]
The successful maintenance of this ceasefire is crucial for regional stability and the well-being of affected populations.

A Ukrainian drone strike targeted a Russian oil depot near Sochi's airport on the Black Sea this weekend, igniting a significant fire. Russian authorities confirmed the attack, leading to temporary cancellations of all flights into and out of Sochi. The incident has had immediate repercussions on Asian stock markets:
Amid these tensions, major companies like Disney and McDonald's are set to report their quarterly earnings.
In related news, a dormant volcano has erupted in Russia's Far East, a phenomenon not witnessed in centuries. NPR's Jeff Brumfield details the event:

Jeff Brumfield reports that the Krasnyynikov volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula, dormant for at least 400 years, began erupting early Sunday morning, unleashing a massive ash cloud that disrupted air traffic in the region. This eruption follows a devastating magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Kamchatka's coast just a week prior.
Harold Tobin, a seismologist at the University of Washington, commented on the situation:
"It is definitely an interesting coincidence or not coincidence."
— Harold Tobin [04:01]
While Tobin suggests that the earthquake likely did not directly cause the eruption, the seismic waves may have triggered the volcano if it was already on the brink of activity. This natural event raises concerns about the potential interplay between seismic activity and volcanic eruptions in geologically active regions.
