A new Trump administration plan will require foreigners from certain countries to put up a bond of up to $15,000 in order to come to the US on a tourist or business visa. NPR Sophie Smith reports that officials say the pilot program is to ensure that those visitors leave when they're supposed to.
Sophie Smith
It's not yet known which countries will be subject to the new requirement, but it'll be those with the highest rate of overstaying visas, as ranked by DHS data. A public notice in the Federal Register explaining the new rule says it will address a clear national security threat of overstays and lax screening. Visitors will have to enter the US through specific airports and put down between 5 and $15,000, which they'd get back if and when they leave on time. The new restrictions are likely to make travel to the US Too costly for many. They're set to go into effect later this month and will remain for a year as officials evaluate how they're working. Authorities say a 23 year old woman was arrested and charged today with assisting 28 year old Austin Robert Drummond. Two men have also been arrested for allegedly helping Drummond. Delta Airlines says it will not use artificial intelligence to set personalized ticket prices for customers after facing criticism from U.S. senators. Member station WABE, Marlin Hyde reports.

The Atlanta based airline told U.S. senators in a letter that it does not share any personal information with Fetcher, the tech company piloting Delta's AI pricing system. U.S. lawmakers and some people on social media worried that information like social media activity and financial status could factor into personalized airfares. Delta is already using the tool for a small percentage of flights and says it's designed to factor in variables like forecast and demand for specific routes and flights, and does not plan on using personal data. The company says it continues to explore ways AI can be used, like predicting maintenance needs and enhancing customer service. For NPR News, I'm Marlon Hodde in Atlanta.

Texas House Speaker Dustin Burroughs has criticized Democratic lawmakers for their absence during a crucial special session aimed at establishing a new congressional map, a move supported by former President Donald Trump. Burroughs accused Democrats of "shirking their responsibility" and obstructing the legislative process necessary for Texas to influence its representation in Congress.
Dustin Burroughs [00:33]: "Return now. Show the courage to face the issues you were elected to solve. Come back and fulfill your duty, because this house will not sit quietly while you obstruct the work of the people. The people of Texas are watching, and so is the nation. And if you choose to continue down this road, you should know there will be consequences."
In response to the Republicans' push, Texas lawmakers have moved to issue civil arrest warrants against Democrats who have fled to cities like Boston and Chicago to prevent the session from achieving the quorum needed for redistricting. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has entered the fray by meeting with six Texas Democrats currently outside the state to strategize a counter-move.
Kathy Hochul [01:20]: "New York would have to change its constitution to redraw its congressional map before the next census. The earliest that could happen is 2027, too late for next year's elections."
However, Hochul faces skepticism from Republican counterparts in the New York State Senate, who accuse her of "fear mongering" and attempting to consolidate political power. The standoff underscores the deep partisan divide and the lengths both parties are willing to go to influence congressional representation.
The Trump administration has unveiled a new policy requiring foreigners from specific countries to post a bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 when applying for tourist or business visas to the United States. This initiative aims to curb the high rate of visa overstays by ensuring that visitors have a financial incentive to depart the country as scheduled.
Sophie Smith [01:56]: "It's not yet known which countries will be subject to the new requirement, but it'll be those with the highest rate of overstaying visas, as ranked by DHS data."
The policy mandates that affected visitors enter the U.S. through designated airports and provides for the return of the bond upon timely departure. Set to take effect later this month, the pilot program will last for one year, during which its effectiveness and economic impact will be assessed. Critics argue that the financial burden may deter legitimate travelers, potentially affecting tourism and business relations.
Shares of electric automaker Tesla experienced a 2.2% increase following the company's board approval of a substantial compensation package for CEO Elon Musk. The package grants Musk 96 million shares, valued at approximately $29 billion, reflecting the company's confidence in his leadership and vision for Tesla's future growth.
This move has sparked discussions in the financial community about executive compensation and its impact on shareholder value. While some investors view the package as a positive endorsement of Musk's long-term strategies, others are concerned about the potential dilution of existing shares and the precedent it sets for high-level executive rewards.
In Tennessee, law enforcement has made significant progress in a high-profile murder case involving the deaths of four individuals. Authorities have arrested a 23-year-old woman accused of assisting 28-year-old Austin Robert Drummond, who is the primary suspect. Additionally, two other men have been charged with aiding Drummond in his alleged crimes.
Meanwhile, in Montana, officials continue their search for an unidentified army veteran believed to be responsible for the killings at a bar in the small town of Anaconda. The manhunt has entered its fourth day, with authorities employing extensive resources to locate and apprehend the suspect.
Delta Airlines has decided to cease the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for setting personalized ticket prices after receiving backlash from U.S. senators and the public. The airline had partnered with tech company Fetcher to pilot an AI pricing system intended to optimize pricing based on factors like demand and forecast.
Marlon Hyde [03:53]: "The Atlanta based airline told U.S. senators in a letter that it does not share any personal information with Fetcher, the tech company piloting Delta's AI pricing system."
Concerns centered around the potential use of sensitive personal data, such as social media activity and financial status, to determine airfare prices. Delta clarified that the AI system was designed to exclude personal data and focused solely on logistical variables. Despite the setback, Delta plans to explore other AI applications, including predictive maintenance and enhancing customer service, aiming to balance technological advancement with customer privacy.
