Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Democratic Party leaders say they're ready for a showdown with the GOP over a Republican drive in Texas to redraw congressional maps in the state. Democratic State lawmakers left Texas Sunday to block passage of a redistricting measure. Today they appeared in ILLINOIS Backed by Governor J.B. pritzker, Donald Trump, Governor Abbott.
Donald Trump
Texas Republicans, well, they know that they're headed toward a loss of the Congress in 2026. They're afraid and they should be.
Lakshmi Singh
President Trump, meanwhile, says Republicans are entitled to five more seats in Texas.
Donald Trump
We have a really good governor and we have good people in Texas. And I won Texas. I got the highest vote in the history of Texas, as you probably know, and we are entitled to five more seats.

President Trump in an interview with cnbc. He was also asked about a third term. Trump said he probably won't run again. And the president addressed tariffs on pharmaceuticals. He said a small tariff now, then a surge later to encourage more domestic production. There have been few Republican town halls held since Congress passed President Trump's tax cut and spending plan. Nebraska Congressman Mike Flood held his town hall last night. Nick Loomis of Nebraska Public Media reports a Republican attempted to discuss the legislation.

Even through the speaker system at the 850 seat auditorium in Lincoln. Flood's opening remarks could hardly be heard at times over jeers from a capacity crowd.
Donald Trump
There's been a lot of misinformation out there around the bill.
Nick Loomis
The leader of the House Main Street Caucus repeatedly said that he would protect Medicaid. In turn, attendees called Flood a liar and yelled that cuts to the program would shut down rural Nebraska hospitals. When Flood said the US can't afford certain programs, the audience responded with repeated choruses of Tax the rich. Flood was accused of hiding the Jeffrey Epstein files during the Q and A segment. He said he supported the release of the documents to a rare moment of applause. For NPR News, I'm Nick Loomis.

In a rare joint appeal, former Israeli army leaders and intelligence officials are calling for an immediate end to the Gaza war. Here's NPR's Eleanor Beardsley.

In a three minute video released Sunday, a who's who of Israel's defense establishment issued an extraordinarily blunt appeal to end the war in Gaza immediately, warning its grinding continuation is steering the country toward the loss of its security and freedom. A lie is being told to the Israeli public, said former Mossad chief Tamir Pardo. Fierce backlash came swiftly from pro government supporters, including some TV hosts calling the video propaganda that undermines the war. One right wing channel dismissed the group as failed leadership and urged them to quote square sit home and quietly enjoy your pensions.

It's npr. The deadly implosion of a submersible as it descended to the titanic wreck could have been prevented. That is the conclusion of a new U.S. coast Guard report that linked the 2023 disaster to ignored safety warnings as well as inadequate design and maintenance. Two years ago this month, the Titan submersible imploded, killing on all five people on board, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who led the company in charge of operations. Stella Remington, the first female boss of Britain's domestic spy agency MI5, has died at the age of 90. NPR's Fatma Al Kassab reports from London.

007 Widely credited as being the inspiration behind Judi Dench's spymaster M in the James Bond films, Dame Stella Rimington was not only the head Britain's Domestic Intelligence Agency, MI5, she was also the first to be officially identified when a newspaper published a photo of her house. Rimington and her family had to move to a covert location for their own protection. She led the service in the mid-1990s when there were threats from the IRA militant group and from Russia. As head of the service, she helped bring its secretive image out of the shadows. After nearly 30 years at MI5, C Stella Remington turned to writing spy novels. Fatima Al Kassab, NPR News, London.
