Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Under pressure to uncover information about Jeffrey Epstein's abuse of underage girls and his powerful connections until his true 2019 death by suicide, the House Oversight Committee has sent letters to appear for depositions this fall, including the Justice Department and the Clintons, as well as former attorneys general and FBI directors. Democratic lawmakers in Texas are vowing to fiercely resist a GOP backed attempt to redraw the state's congressional map ahead of the midterm elections. Of President Trump's urging, they left the state this week that denied a quorum and blocked a redistricting vote. State Representative Armando Walley of Houston decamped to Boston and spoke to NPR's Here and Now.

We know we're in a tough fight, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't fight back. And to awaken the national consciousness, because your state could be next, your votes could be diluted in your community. It could happen here, anywhere across the state. So I'm here to kind of spread the word about that because it's coming.

Legal teams for President Trump and media mogul Rupert Murdoch have agreed that Murdoch won't have to submit to an immediate deposition as a federal judge evaluates his motion to dismiss Trump's defamation lawsuit. NPR's David Folkenflick reports. A suit involves a Wall Street Journal report about a body birthday greeting that Trump sent to the late Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump says he didn't write the letter, said to include a doodle of a naked woman accompanied by his trademark signature. Outside legal observers say the case is all but groundless, protected by the First Amendment if true and not damaging Trump's character if not. The the card was reportedly sent before Epstein was charged with sexual offenses. Trump had sought an order requiring Murdoch to sit for sworn testimony within two weeks due to reports of poor health and his advanced age. Murdoch is 94. Murdoch has agreed to give a sworn declaration on his health condition and to offer regularly scheduled updates. But Murdoch is gambling the case will be dismissed if the judge allows it to proceed. He has agreed to sit for a deposition within 30 days. David Folkenflick, NPR News.
