Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. More than 50 Texas Democrats remain out of their state. The lawmakers are blocking any work from getting done in the Texas state House. That includes on a Republican plan to redraw congressional districts in Texas. The the GOP plan aims to put five more Republican lawmakers in the U.S. house of Representatives. The Texas House speaker, Republican Dustin Burroughs, says the Texas Democrats have to come back.

There are multiple things the Texas House is working on and should be working on at this time. Pursuant to the Constitution, the governor gets to set the agenda, and the Constitution says the members of the legislature shall show up to do their jobs.

The Texas speaker says he assigned warrants for the civil arrests of the state Democrats. But since the Democratic lawmakers are not in Texas, it is not clear if the warrants will have any legal force beyond the state's borders. Israel's cabinet is expected to meet this week to decide whether to expand its war in Gaza. Right wing pressure is growing to allow Israel's full annexation of Gaza and and let Israeli civilians live in Gaza again. As NPR's Emily Fang reports, Jewish settlements existed in Gaza until 20 years ago.

A Tel Aviv University poll in July showed nearly 40% of Israelis support allowing civilian settlements in Gaza itself again. For almost four decades, Israel did physically occupy Gaza. Dov Waxman, a political scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, explains the.

Kind of burden of defending those settlements on the Israeli army and the financial cost as well as the as well as the cost of Israeli lives. That was one of the factors, one.

Of the factors, he says, that led Israel to end this physical occupation within Gaza in 2005. But two decades later, right wing officials in Israel's government want to push out Palestinians from Gaza. Emily Fang, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

Big brand companies and retailers are assessing how long they can absorb costs from President Trump's tariffs. Virtually all imports are affected by the tariffs. Many stores have been keeping prices lower, especially for the back to school shopping season. Up until now, most shoppers have been buying products that were already in stock before most tariffs kicked in. NPR's Alina Selyuk explains the biggest tariffs.

Have been paused and delayed through the spring and most of the summer, with the latest deadline for many countries coming up later this week and so retailers, wholesalers and distributors have had a lot of time to stockpile their goods. But eventually those stockpiles will run out. And supply chain experts are saying already the cost of warehouses housing across the country has started going up as demand for storage space outpaces supply in some places. The National Retail Federation is urging the Trump administration to lower tariffs, saying that some small businesses will simply have to close because of costs. Alina Seluk, NPR News.

You're listening to npr. A federal judge has ruled that music mogul Sean Diddy Combs cannot be released from jail ahead of his sentencing date. Combs was convicted on federal prostitution related charges earlier this summer. He was acquitted of more serious sex trafficking charges. Combs sentencing hearing is set for early October. Officials in New Jersey say they have reached an enormous settlement with three chemical companies. It's to resolve environmental claims from pollution linked to PFAS or Forever Chemicals. The companies, Commerce, Dupont and Corteva will pay nearly $900 million over the next quarter century. NASA is ending its mission to find and identify the types of water that may be on the moon. NASA is launch lost contact with its lunar probe. Joe Palka reports. Mission managers have been searching for the probe for months.

Lunar Trailblazer launched successfully on February 26, but almost immediately, ground controllers lost the ability to command the spacecraft, and so it never made the mid course correction needed to get the probe into lunar orbit. One of the problems seemed to be the spacecraft's solar panels weren't pointing toward the sun, so its batteries weren't charging. Mission managers had hoped the craft might drift into a favorable orientation for charging, so they kept listening for a signal, but none arrived. Scientists are reasonably certain there's water on the moon. They're just not sure what form it's in, ice, frost or water molecules bound to rocks. The technology developed for Lunar Trailblazer will be used on future missions designed to resolve that. For NPR News, I'm Joe Palka.

NPR News: August 5, 2025, 7 AM EDT – Detailed Summary
NPR News Now brings you the latest headlines and in-depth reporting in a concise format. In the August 5, 2025 episode, host Korva Coleman covers a range of pressing issues from political gridlock in Texas to international developments in Gaza, economic impacts of tariffs, high-profile legal cases, environmental settlements, and space exploration setbacks. This summary dives into each story, highlighting key points and notable quotes to provide a comprehensive overview for those who missed the broadcast.
Overview: More than 50 Democratic lawmakers in Texas have left the state, resulting in a standstill in the Texas House of Representatives. Their absence is a strategic move to block legislative activity, including a Republican-backed plan to redraw congressional districts. This redistricting effort aims to secure an additional five Republican seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Key Points:
Notable Quote: Dustin Burroughs stated at [00:44], "There are multiple things the Texas House is working on and should be working on at this time. Pursuant to the Constitution, the governor gets to set the agenda, and the Constitution says the members of the legislature shall show up to do their jobs."
Implications: The ongoing impasse has significant implications for Texas politics and national representation. If successful, the GOP's redistricting could shift the balance of power in the U.S. House, affecting legislation and federal policies.
Overview: Israel's cabinet is slated to convene this week to deliberate on the potential expansion of military operations in Gaza. There is growing pressure from right-wing factions to facilitate the full annexation of Gaza, allowing Israeli civilians to reside there once more.
Key Points:
Notable Quotes: Dov Waxman explained at [01:35], "A Tel Aviv University poll in July showed nearly 40% of Israelis support allowing civilian settlements in Gaza itself again."
An unnamed expert added at [01:52], "Kind of burden of defending those settlements on the Israeli army and the financial cost as well as the cost of Israeli lives. That was one of the factors..."
Implications: The decision to expand control over Gaza could escalate tensions in the region, impacting Israeli-Palestinian relations and broader Middle Eastern stability. The move reflects internal political dynamics within Israel, where right-wing officials are pushing for policies that may lead to increased territorial claims.
Overview: Retailers and major brands are grappling with the sustained impact of tariffs imposed by President Trump. These tariffs affect virtually all imports, leading to increased costs that businesses are struggling to absorb.
Key Points:
Notable Quote: Alina Selyuk reported at [02:41], "Have been paused and delayed through the spring and most of the summer, with the latest deadline for many countries coming up later this week and so retailers, wholesalers and distributors have had a lot of time to stockpile their goods."
Implications: The prolonged tariff regime poses significant challenges for the retail sector, potentially leading to higher consumer prices and reduced competitiveness of American businesses. Small businesses, in particular, face the threat of closure if tariffs remain high, which could result in job losses and diminished market diversity.
Overview: A federal judge has denied bail for music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, ensuring that he remains incarcerated until his sentencing in early October. Combs was convicted on federal prostitution-related charges but was acquitted of more serious sex trafficking allegations.
Key Points:
Implications: The outcome of Combs' sentencing could have broader implications for high-profile legal cases involving public figures. It also raises questions about the enforcement and prosecution strategies related to prostitution and trafficking laws.
Overview: Officials in New Jersey have announced a substantial settlement with three chemical companies—Commerce, Dupont, and Corteva—to resolve environmental claims related to PFAS, commonly known as Forever Chemicals. The companies will collectively pay nearly $900 million over the next 25 years.
Key Points:
Implications: This settlement sets a precedent for future environmental litigation involving PFAS and emphasizes the growing accountability of chemical companies in addressing long-term pollution. It also provides significant funding for remediation and public health initiatives in affected areas.
Overview: NASA has officially terminated its Lunar Trailblazer mission, intended to identify and analyze water sources on the moon. Shortly after its successful launch on February 26, the spacecraft lost communication, preventing it from performing necessary mid-course corrections to achieve lunar orbit.
Key Points:
Notable Quote: Joe Palka reported at [04:08], "Lunar Trailblazer launched successfully on February 26, but almost immediately, ground controllers lost the ability to command the spacecraft, and so it never made the mid course correction needed to get the probe into lunar orbit."
Implications: The termination of this mission represents a setback for NASA's lunar exploration objectives, particularly in the quest to understand water presence on the moon. However, the lessons learned will contribute to the success of future exploratory endeavors, which are crucial for long-term space exploration and potential lunar habitation.
