Live from NPR News, I'm Gael Snyder. A closely watched Democratic primary for an open U.S. senate seat in Michigan has yet to be called. Votes are still being counted, but progressive candidate Abdul El Sayed spoke to supporters saying he overperformed expectations.

Whatever the outcome heading into the November midterm elections, the contest between El Sayed and Congresswoman Haley Stevens is seen as a key test of the direction of the Democratic Party. He was arrested Monday by investigators who found a lighter and waterproof matches in his possession. The Spokane Sheriff's Office said a witness saw him crouching in the grass near where the Old Trails fire started. That was the first of three fires that started on Saturday, burning through neighborhoods in Spokane. At the court hearing, Judge Tony Hazel read the release conditions.
