In Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. The Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, has filed an emergency petition against one of the top Democrats in the Texas House, Representative Jean Woo. This after Wu and dozens of other state lawmaker departed Texas to avoid redrawing the state's congressional districts by Republicans. Abbott said Democrats violated the state constitution and abandoned their office by fleeing to Illinois and other states. By leaving Texas, the Democrats are denying Republicans a quorum needed to move the bill forward. Meanwhile, President Trump is weighing in, taking questions from reporters at the White House and indicating he supports Abbott's efforts to bring the Republican to bring the Democrats back to Austin.

We have a wonderful governor in te. He feels strongly about it. It's going to be up to him. I think there's tremendous support for it.

The new congressional districts could give Republicans a significant advantage in at least five districts now held by Democrats. For little more than a week, Israel's been allowing countries to drop food into Gaza from cargo planes. The airdrops come after images of starving people in Gaza prompted a global outcry. NPR's Ava Bhatrani has more on the challenges of the airdrops.

Palestinians say the airdrops from Arab and European countries land haphazardly, sometimes in the sea and sometimes with the food unfit for human consumption. In a video posted on social media, a man named Uday Al Quran picks up a handful of aid that's been airdropped into Gaza and is now full of sand. Al Quran says this isn't how to deliver humanitarian aid. This, he says, is how to torment people. He asks why can't this food be delivered through the border with Israel? Show us mercy, he pleads. Al Quran was killed days later by a fallen airdrop Tuesday that crushed him, says the Al Aqsa hospital where he worked as a nurse. Aya Baltrawi, NPR News.

The Trump administration is lobbying for the release of grand jury testimony connected to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison while waiting to go on trial on sex trafficking charges. They're also seeking transcript from Ghislaine Maxwell, his longtime associate. It's opposed by Maxwell's lawyers. NPR's Elena Moore reports.

Maxwell is currently serving a 20 year prison sentence for sex trafficking and other charges in connection with her work with Epstein. But in a court filing submitted Tuesday, her lawyers argued that making the transcripts public could negatively impact Maxwell's efforts to have the Supreme Court review her case. They wrote, quote, public curiosity is insufficient when Maxwell's legal and reputational interests are at stake. It comes as the Trump administration continues to face mounting criticism from supporters and lawmakers over its handling of information related to Epstein's case. Elena Moore, NPR News.

And you're listening to npr. Two years ago, the Titan submersible imploded on its way to view the Titanic, killing five people on board. Now investigators have issued a report saying the tragedy could have been prevented. South Carolina Public Radio's Victoria Hansen covered last summer's hearings in Charleston that led to Tuesday's findings.

The Coast Guard's highest level of investigation now says the man who designed and piloted titan, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, ignored safety warnings, skirted regulations and exhibited negligence. Investigators say Rush would have likely faced criminal charges if he'd survived. The 61 year old was taking four passengers on a dive to see the Titanic wreckage when it imploded in June of 2023. For days, the world watched as crew search for the missing vessel, hoping to find survivors. Instead, pieces of the wreckage were found on the ocean floor. Oceangate has since disbanded. For NPR News, I'm Victoria Hanson.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy wants to make it easier for businesses to use drones to make deliveries and inspect power lines work in agriculture and many other areas. Duffy on Tuesday announced a plan to spell out the procedures for expanded drone usage and rules they'd have to follow. Under the plan, drones used by businesses would be have to be built to an industry standard and equipped with collision avoidance systems to ensure a safe separation from aircraft, including planes. The drones could only be flown at altitudes of 400ft or less, and they would have one weight restrictions as well. From Washington, this is NPR News. I'm Dan Ronan.

NPR News Now: August 6, 2025 – Comprehensive Episode Summary
NPR News Now delivered a robust episode on August 6, 2025, covering a spectrum of pivotal national and international issues. This summary encapsulates the key topics discussed, enriched with notable quotes and structured for clarity.
Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has initiated an emergency petition against Democratic Representative Jean Woo and other state lawmakers. This move comes after Woo and several Democrats left Texas to prevent the Republican-controlled legislature from redrawing congressional districts.
Impact on Congressional Districts: Abbott contends that the departure of Democratic lawmakers denies Republicans the necessary quorum to advance redistricting bills, potentially granting Republicans significant advantages in at least five districts currently held by Democrats.
Governor Abbott's Stance: Addressing the situation, Abbott stated at [01:01], “We have a wonderful governor in te. He feels strongly about it. It's going to be up to him. I think there's tremendous support for it.”
Presidential Involvement: President Trump has weighed in, expressing support for Abbott's efforts to compel Democrats to return to Austin, thus ensuring legislative proceedings can continue.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has seen Israel permit humanitarian aid drops via cargo planes. However, the execution of these airdrops has faced significant criticism.
Local Perspective: Palestinians have reported that the airdrops from Arab and European nations are inconsistent, with supplies sometimes landing in the sea or arriving in unusable conditions. Ava Bhatrani highlights a tragic incident where Uday Al Quran, a nurse at Al Aqsa hospital, was crushed by a fallen airdrop while attempting to salvage sand-filled aid packages.
"This isn't how to deliver humanitarian aid. This is how to torment people. He asks why can't this food be delivered through the border with Israel? Show us mercy, he pleads," says Bhatrani at [01:33].
Consequences: The unfortunate death of Al Quran underscores the dangerous and ineffective nature of the current aid distribution method.
The administration is actively lobbying for the disclosure of grand jury testimonies related to Jeffrey Epstein, who died in custody before his trial on sex trafficking charges. Additionally, they are seeking transcripts from Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s long-time associate.
Legal Opposition: Maxwell’s legal team opposes these efforts, arguing that publicizing the transcripts could undermine her ongoing attempts to have the Supreme Court review her case.
"Public curiosity is insufficient when Maxwell's legal and reputational interests are at stake," remarked Elena Moore at [02:34].
Administration's Position: These actions reflect the Trump administration's broader strategy, despite facing criticism from both supporters and lawmakers regarding their handling of Epstein-related information.
Two years post-tragedy, new investigative reports shed light on the catastrophic failure of the Titan submersible that resulted in the loss of five lives during its expedition to the Titanic wreck.
Investigation Conclusions: The Coast Guard's highest-level investigation attributes the implosion to negligence by OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who ignored safety warnings and bypassed critical regulations.
"Investigators say Rush would have likely faced criminal charges if he'd survived," reported Victoria Hansen at [03:34].
Aftermath: The incident has led to increased scrutiny of private submersible operations, with OceanGate disbanding in the wake of the disaster.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy unveiled a comprehensive plan to facilitate broader use of drones in commercial sectors such as delivery services, power line inspections, and agriculture.
Regulatory Framework: The proposed guidelines stipulate that business-operated drones must adhere to industry standards and be equipped with collision avoidance systems to maintain safe distances from manned aircraft, including airplanes.
Operational Constraints: Drones under this framework are restricted to altitudes of 400 feet or lower and must comply with specified weight limitations to ensure safety and minimize interference with existing air traffic.
