European Union foreign ministers will meet by teleconference on Monday to try to firm up the 27 countries positions ahead of Friday's U. S Russia meeting. As Terry Scholz reports, the EU's top diplomat is speaking out against President Trump's suggestion that Ukraine must give up territory to Russia for a peace deal, saying.
Kayakalis
Europe's core interests are at stake. EU foreign policy chief Kayakalis has convened the extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers to discuss the summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The US has the power to force Russia to negotiate seriously on ending its war in Ukraine, Callis said in a statement. But she goes on, any deal between the US And Russia must have Ukraine and the EU included. For it's a matter of Ukraine's and the whole of Europe's security. Aggression cannot be rewarded, she added, saying international law is clear. All temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine. The situation in Gaza will also be discussed. For NPR News, I'm Terry Schultz.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is defending a new military offensive that is sending more troops into Gaza. He said Israel has no choice but to complete the defeat of Hamas. Israel, meanwhile, is facing increasing international condemnation for the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where 11 adults have died from malnutrition this weekend. Several Midwestern states are under flood watches or warnings tonight as major storms continue to pound the region. Milwaukee was among the hardest hit areas, and Mayor Kavaler Johnson is urging residents to stay indoors as more rain falls.
Kavaler Johnson
We're seeing reports from some parts of the city that have received more than a foot of rain, more than a foot of rain in a very short period of time. This flooding event, it's very significant. It's something that Milwaukee hasn't seen in and perhaps a decade or more.

The Wisconsin State Fair canceled its final day on Sunday because of flash flooding. Hundreds of employees of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta were on campus Friday when dozens of shots were fired at the building from a store across the street. The attack shattered windows and left the shooter and a local police officer dead. CDC employees now say they feel targeted by the violence. Sophie Gratis from Georgia Public Broadcasting has more on our story.

Clustered at an Atlanta park on Sunday, Abby Tai and other former and current CDC staff denounced the violence and called for Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. To resign.
Abby Tai
He, along with others in this administration, have sown distrust among the American people, dehumanizing CDCers and pointing to us as villains.

Ty says her child was also on lockdown during the shooting at a nearby daycare. In a statement emailed to CDC employees, RFK Jr. Called the shooting, quote, unsettling. Many CDC employees will start the week working from home with plans for an all staff meeting this week. It was hours after the 5pm active shooter alert went out that CDC employees were allowed to go home on Friday. For NPR News, I'm Sophie Gradas in Atlanta.

And you're listening to NPR News. In western Colorado, firefighters were up against another day of windy, hot weather on Sunday as they tried to protect homes and infrastructure throughout threatened by the lee fire. As NPR's Kirk Siegler reports, the fire has now grown to more than 100,000 acres.
Kirk Siegler
Firefighters have struggled to get much of a containment line dug around the Lee Fire because of gusty winds and extremely dry fuels. The concern continues to be trying to stop it from burning east toward the small ranching and hunting town of Meeker, Colorado. When megafires like this ignite in overgrown forests made even drier by climate change, there aren't a lot of options for containing them until there's cooperation from the weather. There's little change expected in the short term forecast, so fire managers are focused mainly on protecting structures where it's safe to do so. Meanwhile, some good news is that resources are pouring into the region, thanks in part to it being a relatively quieter than expected summer wildfire season in the west so far. A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit Turkey's northwestern region on Sunday. At least one person has been killed and more than a dozen buildings have collapsed along with two mosque minarets. At least four people were rescued from the rubble. Shocks from the quake were felt as far away as Istanbul. Justin Verlander struck out the side in a first inning Sunday against the Washington Nationals to become just the 10th pitcher in Major League Baseball history to reach 3,500 career strikeouts. Then he fell apart, giving up four runs in the second inning as the Nationals beat the San Francisco Giants 8 to nothing. It's another career milestone, though, for the 42 year old Verlander. Live from NPR News, presented by Dale Willman.
NPR News Now opens with significant developments in international diplomacy. European Union (EU) foreign ministers are set to convene via teleconference on Monday to solidify the collective stance of the 27 member countries ahead of the anticipated summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
EU Foreign Policy Chief Callis emphasized the bloc's unwavering position, stating, "Europe's core interests are at stake" (00:37). Callis criticized President Trump’s proposition that Ukraine must cede territory to Russia as a condition for peace, asserting that "aggression cannot be rewarded" and reaffirming, "all temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine" (00:37). This firm stance underscores the EU's commitment to upholding international law and ensuring that any peace agreement includes Ukraine and the EU as essential parties, safeguarding the security of both Ukraine and the broader European region.
The podcast also highlights escalating tensions in the Middle East. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended the nation's intensified military operations in Gaza, asserting that Israel has "no choice but to complete the defeat of Hamas" (01:17). This offensive has drawn increasing international criticism due to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, where reports indicate that 11 adults have succumbed to malnutrition over the past weekend. The conflict continues to draw global attention, balancing military objectives with humanitarian implications.
Turning to domestic news, several Midwestern states, including Wisconsin, are grappling with severe weather conditions. Milwaukee has been particularly hard-hit, experiencing unprecedented rainfall with some areas receiving "more than a foot of rain in a very short period of time" (01:49). Mayor Kavaler Johnson urged residents to stay indoors, highlighting the magnitude of the event: "This flooding event is very significant. It's something that Milwaukee hasn't seen in, perhaps, a decade or more" (01:49). The extreme weather has led to the cancellation of the Wisconsin State Fair's final day due to flash flooding, emphasizing the growing challenges posed by climate-related events.
A tragic incident unfolded at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta. On Friday, dozens of shots were fired from a store across the street, resulting in the deaths of the shooter and a local police officer, while shattering windows and leaving CDC employees feeling targeted (02:03). In the aftermath, former and current CDC staff, including Abby Tai, gathered at an Atlanta park to denounce the violence and called for the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., accusing the administration of "sowing distrust among the American people" and portraying CDC workers as "villains" (02:40). The incident has led to heightened security measures, with many CDC employees now working from home and planning an all-staff meeting to address the situation (02:48).
In western Colorado, firefighters are battling the rapidly expanding Lee Fire, which has now consumed over 100,000 acres. NPR's Kirk Siegler reports that "gusty winds and extremely dry fuels" have hindered efforts to establish a containment line around the blaze (03:33). The primary concern is preventing the fire from reaching the small town of Meeker, a hub for ranching and hunting. Climate change-induced overgrowth and dryness in forests have exacerbated the fire's intensity, limiting containment options until weather conditions become more favorable. Despite these challenges, additional resources are being mobilized, aided by a comparatively quieter wildfire season in the western United States thus far (03:33).
A powerful earthquake, registering a magnitude of 6.1, struck northwestern Turkey on Sunday, resulting in at least one fatality and the collapse of more than a dozen buildings, including two mosque minarets. Rescue teams have managed to save at least four individuals from the rubble, and the seismic activity was felt as far away as Istanbul (04:14). The earthquake underscores the region's vulnerability to seismic events and the ongoing need for robust disaster preparedness and response strategies.
In sports news, MLB pitcher Justin Verlander made history by becoming only the 10th pitcher to reach 3,500 career strikeouts. During a game on Sunday, Verlander struck out the side in the first inning against the Washington Nationals, marking a significant achievement (04:14). However, his performance took a downturn in the second inning, conceding four runs as the Nationals defeated the San Francisco Giants 8-0. Despite the mixed performance, Verlander's milestone remains a testament to his enduring prowess on the mound at 42 years old (04:14).
