In a joint statement with his French and German counterparts, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine. He says meaningful negotiations can only take place in the context of a ceasefire and that in the absence of that sanctions, sanctions on Russia should be strengthened. International borders must not be changed by force, the statement says. And it says a, quote, coalition of the willing is ready to play an active role in Ukraine with a reassurance force. That's a reference to the possible deployment of British and French peacekeepers to certain zones of Ukraine after combat halts. Lauren Frayer, NPR News, London.

European Leaders Urge Consideration of Ukraine’s Security Ahead of Trump-Putin Summit
Timestamp: [00:25 – 00:45]
In today’s geopolitical developments, European leaders have actively engaged in discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. These conversations precede President Trump’s scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, alongside his French and German counterparts, emphasized the indispensability of Ukraine’s role in any peace negotiations. In a joint statement, Starmer stated, “The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine,” underscoring that “meaningful negotiations can only take place in the context of a ceasefire” and advocating for the strengthening of sanctions against Russia in their absence. The statement further highlighted that “International borders must not be changed by force,” and introduced the concept of a “coalition of the willing” ready to deploy British and French peacekeepers to designated zones in Ukraine following a combat cessation (Frayer, [00:45]).
Trump Triumphs in Court Battle Over Foreign Aid Freeze, Impacting U.S. Care Workforce
Timestamp: [01:25 – 02:19]
In domestic policy news, President Trump has secured a significant legal victory by winning a court case that allows the administration to freeze billions in foreign aid. An appeals court overturned a previous injunction that mandated the continuation of funding, thereby enabling the Trump administration to enforce its decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from countries including Honduras, Nicaragua, and Haiti.
Andrea Hsu reports that this policy shift has sent shockwaves through the care sector, particularly affecting immigrants who serve as vital caregivers for the elderly and sick. Arnoufal de la Cruz, leader of SEIU Local 2015 in California, expressed deep concerns: “In coming months, immigrants from Honduras, Nicaragua, Haiti and other countries are set to lose their authorization to live and work in the U.S. Among them are home health care workers and nursing home workers, some of who have been in the US for decades” ([01:49]).
De la Cruz further emphasized the dire consequences, stating, “We were already in a huge care shortage, so there's not enough caregivers to be matched with people who need care” ([02:15]). The administration defends its stance by alleging that TPS has been misused as a “de facto asylum system,” allowing individuals to reside in the U.S. indefinitely without proper vetting ([02:19]).
Severe Heatwave Strikes the Middle East, Gaza Faces Extreme Vulnerabilities
Timestamp: [02:33 – 03:17]
An unprecedented heatwave is currently sweeping across parts of the Middle East, with Israel, Jordan, and Lebanon experiencing soaring temperatures reaching up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Israel's state meteorological agency announced expectations of the hottest day on record since 1942.
Particularly alarming is the situation in Gaza, where approximately 2 million people are enduring the extreme heat under dire conditions. Emily Feng notes, “The Strip has basically no functioning utilities, meaning no air conditioning, and many people are living in tents, having been displaced in Israel's war there” ([02:46]). This lack of infrastructure exacerbates the human suffering amidst the scorching temperatures.
