In Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. President Trump says he's hoping to schedule a trilateral meeting with himself and President Vladimir Putin of Russia and Ukraine's President Vladimir Zelensky. NPR's Tamara Keith reports. Zelensky and European leaders were at the White House Monday in a follow up to Trump's Alaska summit with Putin.
C
At the start of the White House meeting, European leaders expressed cautious optimism as President Trump outlined the contours of a potential peace deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
D
In a very significant step, President Putin agreed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine. And this is one of the key points that we need to consider, and we're going to be considering that at the table also, like who will do what?
C
But he added, there would likely need to be a possible exchange of territory where Russia has made gains. Trump said he hoped a trilateral meeting would be possible very soon, and Zelensky echoed that hope. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

House Democrats in Texas have ended their two week walkout, setting the stage for a controversial passage of a congressional map that favors Republicans in next year's midterm election. From Houston Public Media, Andrew Schneider reports.
E
Texas speaker of the House Dustin Burrows said the time had come for the chamber to get back to business.
F
This body has endured wars, economic depressions and quorum breaks dating back to the very first session. It will withstand this, too. And what will remain is a chamber where the majority has the right to prevail and the minority has the right to be heard.
E
That said, Burroughs announced that those Democrats for whom arrest warrants had been issued would only be allowed to leave the chamber in the custody of Department of Public Safety troopers who would ensure their return on Wednesday. For NPR News, I'm Andrew Schneider in Houston.

Storm surge and tropical storm watches are in effect for North Carolina's Outer Banks as Hurricane Erin spins in the Atlantic Ocean parallel with the Bahamas before it is expected to turn north. Erin is a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph. Joshe Adams is Bermuda's acting minister of national security. He is urging residents to take this storm seriously.
G
The waters will be very dangerous and lives will be placed at risk. I must be absolutely clear, although Hurricane Erin is not a direct threat, this is a powerful hurricane and it is the first time this season Bermuda will feel the effects of such a system.
B
While Erin is not expected to make landfall in the United States, the National Hurricane center says it will significantly impact the Mid Atlantic region with waves of 15 to 20ft and possible coastal flooding. North Carolina officials have issued mandatory evacuation orders for several islands. A mixed day on Wall Street. The Dow downed the Nasdaq and the S and P up. This is NPR News. Jordan is bringing back compulsory military services. NPR's Jane Araf reports. The move comes amid worries that Jordan's neighbors Israel will try to expand across the region.
H
Jordan abolished compulsory service in 1991. The the plan announced Monday will start with 18 year old men doing three months of training. The Israeli right wing extremist behavior is a direct attack on the security of the region. Communications Minister Mohammad Momini told reporters in announcing details of the plan. Jordan has a peace treaty with Israel, but it has long feared that the Israeli government will expel more Palestinians to the kingdom. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week expressed support for a greater Israel, a concept that would envision Israel taking over Jordan and other countries. Jay Neraf, NPR News, Aman.

A year after the U.S. postal Service began a push to replace its thousands of aging gasoline vehicles with a mostly electric fleet, some Republicans in Congress are trying to end that effort. Iowa Senator Joni Ernst says she will go ahead with the bill to rescind what's left of $3 billion in federal funding. She says she supports gasoline powered trucks with corn based ethanol. Iowa is a huge corn producing state and 40 plants in the state produce nearly 30% of the nation's ethanol. Texas health officials say nearly eight months after a measles outbreak that killed two children and sickened 762, it is now over nearly 100 people were hospitalized. This is NPR support.
