Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. President Trump says he is working on a bilateral meeting between his counterparts from Russia and Ukraine, and depending on how that goes, a trilateral meeting with him would follow. Russia says it remains open to all of it. But as NPR's Charles Maines reports from Moscow, the Kremlin remains vague on the timing of the talks.
C
In an interview on state television, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow was not refusing any format of meetings, be they between Putin and Zelensky or eventually including President Trump. Yet Lavrov warned preparations for such events take time. His comments suggested Moscow was looking to slow walk Trump's calls for a Putin Zelenskyy meeting in the coming days or weeks. Trump says Putin agreed to the BIL talks, to be followed by a trilateral meeting, including Trump following a phone call he placed to the Russian leader Monday. Kremlin aide Yuriyushakov was more circumspect, saying only Moscow was considering the possibility of holding higher level direct talks with Ukraine. Charles Maynes, NPR News, Moscow.

The White House says dozens of homeless encampments have been cleared in Washington, D.C. a week ago, President Trump sent hundreds of federal agents and National Guard troops to the city. NPR's Jennifer Ludden reports. It is not clear where the people who have been displaced have gone.
D
Homeless service providers say many likely opted to stay outside, moving around to evade authorities. Some are in shelters the city made more beds available or hotels paid for by community members. Jesse Rabinowitz with the National Homelessness Law center says the mass displacement will make it even harder to eventually connect people to housing.

It was so fast that I worry people were not able to save vital documents, medication, heirlooms, clothes, things like that.

The White House says it has not arrested any people for being homeless, and service providers are relieved about that. But they suggest the money this federal surge is costing could have gone toward affordable housing instead. Jennifer Lutton, NPR News, Washington.

Texas Republicans are pursuing a redrawn congressional map in their state that would give the GOP five additional U.S. house seats. California Democrats are looking to counterbalance with their own new map. Laura Fitzgerald with CAP Radio has the.

Latest somewhat unlikely areas. For example, one district would include communities in Modoc county all the way up north near the Oregon border with Marin county, which is way down near San Francisco. Those are two very politically different regions, and under this proposal, they'd have the same congressional representative. Democrats here say the plan is to vote on the map this week, and then this will go to the voters so that they can have the final say in November.

Cap Radio's Laura Fitzgerald reporting. State lawmakers in Texas and California have been advancing their respective measures on a redistricting battle that ultimately could decide the balance of power in Congress in next year's midterm elections. From Washington, this is NPR News. Wind whip flames in Madrid and across Spain are inflicting one of the most destructive fire seasons the country has experienced in decades. Wildfires across parts of southern Europe are products of a prolonged heat wave that, as NPR's Miguel Macias reports from Seville, has sent temperatures soaring above 110 degrees in Spain.
G
The wildfires have claimed several lives and devastated an estimated 900,000 acres, making this year's fire season among the worst on record. Two major fires in the northwest of the country have grown to become the largest on record. Fires in the central western region of Extremadura and in the south have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people nationally. After 16 days of intense heat, temperatures dropped slightly on Tuesday and ending what has become one of the longest heat waves ever recorded in Spain. Climate change is making large, destructive wildfires more likely because of hotter temperatures and drier vegetation. Miguel Macias, NPR News, Seville, Spain.

It was first spotted by the telescope's near infrared camera in February. Uranus has 28 known moons named after various historic figures. Actually, this latest, still nameless, tiny moon makes 29. US stocks are trading lower this hour. The NASDAQ is now down more than 300 points, or nearly 1.5% at 21,316. The S&P is off 42. The Dow is down 33 points. It's NPR News.
