Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Defense officials from several countries, including Britain, are meeting at the Pentagon today. NPR's Lauren Frayer says the focus will be on Ukraine and ways to help Kyiv if Russia and Ukraine reach a peace agreement.
Lauren Frayer
The UK and France are preparing to send peacekeepers to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. They call it a reassurance force. UK officials have said they'll help police Ukraine's skies and seas, but will not deploy British troops to the front line with Russia. The head of the UK's armed forces, Tony Radican, is attending these Pentagon meetings. Among the details to be worked out is the possibility of a no fly zone and whether European peacekeepers will be able to use US military bases in Europe as staging areas. About 30 countries have said they'll participate in a coalition of the willing, and about 10 have said they'll send troops. Lauren Frayer, NPR News, Edinburgh.

Federal public health employees in the US are asking Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. To stop spreading inaccurate information and to support his staff in the wake of a deadly attack earlier this month at the CDC. NPR's Ping Wang reports on the letter addressed to Kennedy and members of Congress.
Ping Wang
On August 8, a gunman fired hundreds of rounds at the CDC in Atlanta while hundreds of employees sheltered in place. Authorities say he was motivated by his discontent with COVID vaccines. Dr. Fiona Havers, a former CDC official who left in June, says employees are angry and traumatized.
Dr. Fiona Havers
It's really critical that the scale of this event is recognized and that people that work in public health and public health in general are given much more support than they're being given right now.
Ping Wang
After the attack, Kennedy toured the CDC and posted his support for workers on social media, but many say he could do more. Over 750 current and former federal health workers signed the letter, which called for Kennedy to stand up for the CDC science and stop endangering the nation's health. Health Ping Huang, NPR News.

In North Carolina, Governor Josh Stein has declared a state of emergency with Hurricane Erin forecast to bring storm surges and dangerous wind gusts to the state. Bradley George of Members HWNC reports, that last check, erin, was about 365 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras with top sustained winds of 110 mph.
Bradley George
August is usually a busy time on North Carolina's Outer Banks, but residents and tourists were ordered to leave Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. Governor Stein says people who live elsewhere on the coast should be prepared to evacuate. Shelters have opened on the mainland. Arran would be the worst storm to affect the outer Banks since 2019. That's when Hurricane Dorian swamped Ocracoke island with 7ft of water. For NPR News, I'm Bradley George in Chapel Hill.

From Washington, this is NPR News. Pro democracy activist Jimmy Lai's landmark sedition trial in Hong Kong is in its final stage nearly two years after it began. Today, the media tycoon's attorney argued his client has the right to free speech. The 77 year old defendant is charged with violating a national security law China imposed following 2019 anti government protests. If convicted, he could receive life in prison. However, the state of Lai's health is sparking concern. He appears visibly thinner since the start of his trial. The US Director of National intelligence says the British government is dropping its demand for iPhone maker Apple to provide what's called a backdoor to customer data. NPR's Bobby Allen reports it would have provided authorities access to millions of people's information.
Bobby Allen
The British government has abandoned its push for Apple to create a backdoor allowing law enforcement to access the data of millions of customers. A deal that led to the United Kingdom backing off Apple was announced by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Law enforcement in the UK Ordered Apple to allow investigators to view encrypted material from users. That drew bipartisan criticism as an attack on privacy and security. Apple responded by saying it would no longer offer a feature to UK users to encrypt iCloud data, including texts, notes, photos and contacts. In the US law enforcement can often obtain that material from iCloud storage with a search warrant unless the encrypted feature is enabled. Bobby Allen, NPR News.
