I'm Dale Willman. Israel Sunday launched a series of airstrikes on the capital of Yemen. The attacks came after Houthi militants fired missiles at Israel last week. NPR's Jackie Northam reports from Tel Aviv.

Israel's military says 10 fighter jets took part in the attack on targets in Yemen, including a Houthi military site in the capital Sana', A, as well as power plants and a fuel storage site at an oil company. A video on social media shows a massive orange colored fireball over part of the city. The strikes come after Houthis launched a ballistic missile at Israel on Friday. Israeli officials say the missile carried a cluster bomb, the first time this type of munition has been launched from Yemen. Houthi rebels have repeatedly fired missiles and drones at Israel since the start of the Gaza war nearly two years ago in solidarity with the Palestinians. Jackie Northam, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

Following the deployment of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. president Trump says he's now thinking about sending troops to Chicago next, but Illinois officials say Trump has no legal standing to do so. NPR's Joe Hernandez has more on the reaction from the prairie states.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker
Some Illinois leaders are saying they don't want this to happen. One of them is Illinois. Illinois Governor J.B. pritzker. He's a Democrat, and he said in a post on social media over the weekend that Trump's threat to send the National Guard to Chicago, quote, isn't about safety. It's a test of the limits of his power and a trial run for a police state. Pritzker also said in a separate statement that Illinois did not ask for this and that there's no emergency in the state to warrant the National Guard going there.

Trump says the cities need help to get violent crime under control. But in both Washington, D.C. and Chicago, violent crime rates have dropped precipitously in recent years. Vice President J.D. vance is defending Republican efforts to gerrymander congressional maps ahead of next year's midterm elections. At the request of President Trump, Texas lawmakers recently approved a new map that adds five favorable seats for the GOP. NPR's Ashley Lopez has our reports.

Vance said in an interview on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday that this ongoing redistricting fight is an effort to counter maps drawn to favor Democrats in blue states.
J.D. Vance
All we're doing, frankly, is trying to make the situation a little bit more fair on a national scale. The Democrats have gerrymandered their states really aggressively.
Ashley Lopez
Partisan gerrymandering is practiced by both parties, although some Democratic states have independent redistricting commissions. Democrats say they plan to counter Republican efforts ahead of next year. California Democrats are asking voters to approve a ballot measure this fall that could allow the state to add five more seats favorable to Democrats to its map. Ashley Lopez, NPR News.

Weld County Fire Department crews found six bodies when they responded to a call for a confined space rescue at the Prospect Valley Dairy on Wednesday. The county Coroner's office reports four victims were extended family members. 50 year old Alejandro Espinoza Cruz was killed along with his two sons, 29 year old Carlos Espinoza Pardo and 17 year old Oscar Espinoza Leos, who attended high school in the area. The coroner says the cause of death was likely a gas exposure in the confined space, but the office is waiting on additional testing. There is no indication a crime took place. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also investigating the incident. For NPR News, I'm Emma Vandeninde in Denver.

It appears that the Netflix film K Pop Demon Hunters took first place at North American box offices this weekend. Netflix has a policy of not reporting ticket sales, but rival studios estimate the movie brought in between 16 and 18 million dollars. The horror movie Weapons, meanwhile, came in second with 15.6 million dollars. And Freakier Friday earned 9.2 million dollars in in its third week of release. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
