National Guard troops are already on the ground in Washington, D.C. where Mayor Muriel Bowser has ordered an emergency operations center to continue to work with a number of federal law enforcement entities with no indication of an end date. We get more on this story from Alex Koma of member station WAMU in Washington.

Bowser is directing local authorities to coordinate with the federal government, quote, to the maximum extent allowable by law, even after Trump returns control of the city's Police Department to D.C. leaders. She's previously said she welcomes the surge of federal officers into the city, despite her critiques of some of their tactics. That's earned her criticism from other D.C. lawmakers and stands in contrast to the much more defiant approach embraced by mayors in Baltimore and Chicago. Still, Bowser says she will renew her push to get federal officers to clearly identify themselves and stop wearing masks after facing frequent complaints from residents. Washington, D.C. the Pentagon is poised to send as many as 600 military lawyers to the Justice Department to help process a backlog of immigration cases. With heightened prosecution of illegal immigration under President Trump, there's an estimated backlog of three and a half million cases. The Health Ministry in Gaza says nearly 200 people died from malnutrition in August. Deaths from starvation in the region are soaring. NPR's Aya Bhatrawi has details.

A report written by the world's foremost experts on hunger declared a famine in Gaza City nearly two weeks ago. Yet deaths from malnutrition have only climbed since then, reaching an all time high in the past 24 hours. Israel's government has dismissed the findings as false and is instead moving to halt all aid to Gaza City as it mobilizes tens of thousands of troops to invade the city. The UN Says tens of thousands of people have already been displaced from their homes in Gaza Gaza City in recent weeks. Meanwhile, mediators in Egypt and Qatar say Israel's government has still not responded to a ceasefire proposal agreed to by Hamas that would release some hostages. In a social media post, Trump wrote that 11, quote, terrorists were killed. He described them as members of the Trend Aragua, a Venezuelan criminal gang. It was the first confirmed US Attack since Trump ordered Navy destroyers and cruisers to the Caribbean to help stop the flow of illegal drugs. Washington accuses Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of leading a drug cartel. Maduro claims that the US Military buildup is meant to overthrow his government. For NPR News, I'm John Otis.
