Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Ramm. A memorial service will be held next Sunday near Phoenix, Arizona for Charlie Kirk. The conservative activist was shot to death last week while speaking at Utah Valley University. A suspect is in custody, tyler Robinson, a 22 year old Utah man. NPR's Bobby Allen has more.
Bobby Allen
Utah county prosecutors said they intend to file aggravated murder charges against him on Tuesday, when he is also set to make his first court appearance. The charges carry the possible punishment of the death penalty if convicted. And most of what we know about the case so far is outlined in an affidavit that that was filed after Robinson's arrest. And it says Robinson discussed with his family that Charlie Kirk was coming to Utah Valley University and that he really disliked Kirk, telling them that Kirk was, quote, full of hate and spreading hate.

NPR's Bobby Allen reporting. Congress has until the end of the month to agree on a funding bill or the government will shut down. NPR's Mar Liasson reports.
Mara Liasson
Members of Congress are facing a deadline of midnight on September 30, and the only way they can avoid a government shutdown is with bipartisan vote in the Senate. Republicans do not have the votes by themselves to overcome a filibuster. A large part of the Democratic base wants their party to fight, to refuse to vote, to keep the government open unless they get concessions on Medicaid and Obamacare subsidies. But other Democrats say that's a trap. They say Republicans don't care whether the government stays open or not and that Democrats would be blamed for a shutdown. Mara Liasson, NPR News.

Republican Congressman Michael McCaul of Texas won't run for re election next year.
Michael McCaul
It's been an honor to serve for over two decades in the Congress. I'm looking now for a new challenge.

He also told ABC he's alarmed that Russian drones entered Polish airspace last week. He said he's concerned Russia's escalation in Eastern Europe could lead to World War Three. McCall has long pushed President Trump to take a tougher stance. Days after the Russian invasion, Romania says its airspace was violated. Terry Scholz reports.
Terry Scholz
Romania scrambled to F16 Saturday to track a Russian drone flying through its airspace, trailing the vehicle until it disappeared from the radar and posed no threat to civilians on the ground. Romanian Defense Minister Ayonut Mostianu said on X his government condemns Russia's reckless behavior, which threatens regional stability, and said NATO countries remain vigilant and ready to defend every inch of allied airspace. Poland also put its defenses on high alert Saturday and temporarily closed closed an airport in the eastern city of Lublin while NATO and Polish jets patrolled the airspace during Russian drone strikes in eastern Ukraine. NATO's new Eastern Sentry mission is assembling additional military resources, including fighter jets and anti drone equipment to counter potential threats from Russian drones. For NPR News, I'm Terry Scholz in Brussels.

This is NPR News. In Washington, Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Israel today for a two day visit. He's expected to discuss Israel's plans to seize Gaza City with where about a million Palestinians have sought refuge from Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. He's also expected to discuss Israel's strike on Doha, Qatar, last week. Paramount has issued a statement criticizing a letter signed last week by more than 4,000 Hollywood actors and filmmakers pledging to boycott Israeli film groups. NPR's Chloe Veltman reports.

Paramount's statement issued on Friday, said it disagreed with the call to boycott Israeli filmmakers. Silencing individual creative artists based on their nationality does not promote better understanding or advance the cause of peace, the statement said. Well known actors and directors such as Emma Stone, Gael Garcia Bernal and Ava DuVernay have signed the letter, which went live online on Tuesday. In a response on Instagram to Paramount's criticism, their group issued a statement reiterating that the pledge does not ask people to avoid working with individual members of the Israeli film community, but rather Israeli film institutions involved in, quote, whitewashing or justifying Israel's genocide in Gaza. Chloe Valtman, NPR News.
