Live from NPR News in New York City, I'm Dwahilisai Kautel. State prosecutors in Utah say they plan to file aggravated murder charges against young man who fatally shot conservative activist Charlie Kirk. NPR's Bobby Allen is in Salt Lake City and has this report.

Utah authorities say 22 year old Tyler Robinson will be facing murder, firearm and other charges as early as Tuesday. Robinson has been detained in a county jail since he turned himself over to authorities in connection with the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. The Department of Justice is expected to file separate federal charges against Robinson. President Trump has called Kirk's death a dark moment for America. Speculation has swirled online about Robinson's exact motivation and political ideology, but so far investigators have not elaborated beyond saying Robinson knew Kirk was going to be in Utah and that he thought Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate. A memorial and funeral service for Kirk has been set for later this month in Arizona. Bobby Allen, NPR News, Salt Lake City.

If convicted, the offense can be punishable with the death penalty. Federal immigration raids are taking place across the country. In Los Angeles, the Supreme Court last Monday cleared the way for federal agents to use race and ethnicity to question people about their legal status In Massachusetts, Washington, D.C. new York, Illinois, ICE continues to make arrest and often headlines. NPR's Jasmine Gardes explains the latest ruling by the Supreme Court and what it means for civil rights in the US Right now.

The Supreme Court in a temporary ruling, basically what they said is that immigration agents may concede, consider factors like race, whether Spanish is being spoken, whether English is being spoken with an accent and employment location are people hanging out outside of a Home Depot. They may consider those factors when deciding to detain and interrogate someone.

Advocates are dismayed at the lack of discussion of smoking and nicotine addiction in the list of recommendations for addressing chronic disease. A university professor in Canada has been placed on leave after posting a controversial comment about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. CBC News reports that Ruth Marshall, an associate professor of religious studies and political science at the University of Toronto, was placed on leave. And according to an unnamed spokesperson from the school, the matter is being looked into in the U.S. according to NPR analysis, at least 30 people across the country have been either put on leave, fired, investigated or faced calls to resign because of social media posts reacting to the murder of Charlie Kirk. The Netherlands is threatening to boycott next year's Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is allowed to compete. NPR's Chloe Veltman reports. The country joins a growing number threatening withdrawal.

The Dutch public broadcaster Avatros issued a statement online on Friday saying it can no longer justify Israel's participation in the contest given, quote, the ongoing and severe human suffering in Gaza. The country joins broadcasters in Ireland, Spain and Slovenia in threatening to withdraw from the 2026 contest. Schedul take place next May in Vienna, Austria. Iceland is also saying its involvement is uncertain. Eurovision is one of the most popular Global Entertainment events. 2025 saw its largest audience ever. The European Broadcasting Union, which organizes Eurovision, did not respond immediately to a request for comment. It is expected to reach a decision about Israel's participation in December.
