News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. Prosecutors in Utah say they could file formal charges as soon as Tuesday against the man suspected of killing conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. NPR's Joe Hernandez.

22 year old Tyler Robinson is being held without bail in a Utah jail. He's set to face formal charges this week such as aggravated murder and obstruction of justice. Aggravated murder carries the potential sentence of the death penalty in Utah. Governor Spencer Cox told ABC's this Week that Robinson has not confessed to authorities.
Governor Spencer Cox
He's not cooperating, but, but, but all the people around him are cooperating and I, I think that's, that's, that's very important.
Joe Hernandez
Cox said investigators are being Robinson's roommate, who he says was also a romantic partner. Kirk was shot and killed Wednesday during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University. Joe Hernandez, NPR News.

Ukrainian President Zelensky says a Russian drone violated Romania's airspace over the weekend and flew nearly an hour into NATO airspace. NPR's Joanna Kakis reports. Zelensky calls it, quote, an obvious expansion of Russia's war, though the Kremlin hasn't commented yet.
Joanna Kakissis
Romania's Defense Ministry said the Russian drone was detected on the country's border with Ukraine after Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian infrastructure along the Danube River. Romania said the drone did not fly over populated areas or pose an imminent danger and eventually it disappeared from the radar. Meanwhile, Zelensky said in a video address that the Ukrainian military is striking what he calls Russia's war machine. He said Ukraine has hit Russian oil plants and depots to restrict Russia's ability to wage war. He also urged urged Ukraine's allies to further sanction Russia in response to Russian drones violating Polish and Romanian airspace. Joanna Kakissis, NPR News, Kyiv.

The Federal Reserve meets this week and the central bank is widely expected to cut interest rates. NPR's Maria Aspen reports. The Fed's decision comes amid ongoing pressure from the White House.
Maria Aspen
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to lower the costs of borrowing, and investors are already celebrating. All three major US Stock indices hit record highs last week despite mounting concerns over the health of the US Economy. The Fed has been trying to cool inflation by keeping interest rates relatively high. But now it's also trying to shore up the job market, which is showing signs of weakness and cutting rates could help. The decision will also be closely watched for political reasons. The Fed is supposed to be independent, but President Trump is trying to exert more control over it and has been pressuring the Fed to lower rates for months. Maria Aspen, NPR News, New York.

You're listening to NPR News from Washington. Colorado river researchers say water levels at the nation's two largest reservoirs are dropping fast and they're on track for dire consequences. They're all calling on policymakers to move quickly to protect Lake Powell and Lake Mead. Alex Hager of member station KUNC has.
Alex Hager
More negotiators are locked in talks about the future of those reservoirs after 2026, when the current rules for managing water there expire. But the authors of this report say a dry year could bring levels so low the reservoirs stop working before any new rules go into effect. Catherine Terra with the University of New Mexico is one of them.
Catherine Terra
The consequence of drawing down these reservoirs and, you know, not conserving as a basin is that people won't get water in a way that I don't think we've seen before.
Alex Hager
Tara says the seven states that use the Colorado river have to quickly agree on cutbacks to fix this. That work will be hard, but Tara says it is possible with collaboration. For NPR News, I'm Alex Hager in Fort Collins, Colorado.

At the weekend box office demon Infinity Castle took the top spot with an estimated $70 million in ticket sales. That marks the biggest opening for an anime film. It's the latest movie in a three film trilogy. In second place, the Con Last Rites with $26 million. That horror sequel has now scared up $131 million domestically. In third place, Focus features Downton Abbey, the grand finale with $18 million. Set in the 1930s, the film finds Lady Mary embroiled in a public scandal as the Crawleys confront financial strain.
