Live from NPR News in New York City. I'm Dwahlisa Kowtel. State prosecutors in Utah say they plan to file aggravated murder charges against the young man who fatally shot conservative activist Charlie Kirk. NPR's Bobby Allen is in Salt Lake City with the latest.

Utah authorities say 22 year old Tyler Robinson will be facing murder, firearm and other charges as early as Tuesday. Robinson has been detained in a county jail since he turned himself over to authorities in connection with the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. The Department of Justice is expected to file separate federal charges against Robinson. President Trump has called Kirk's death a dark moment for America speaking. Speculation has swirled online about Robinson's exact motivation and political ideology, but so far investigators have not elaborated beyond saying Robinson knew Kirk was going to be in Utah and that he thought Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate. A memorial and funeral service for Kirk has been set for later this month in Arizona. Bobby Allen, NPR News, Salt Lake City.

If convicted, the offense can be punishable with the death penalty. The U.S. department of Education is cutting funding from some colleges that help student parents pay for child care. Without the funds, there's fear students might drop out. Northwest Public Broadcasting's Lauren Gallup reports.

Washington state has some of the highest child care costs in the country. Clover Park Technical College here in Tacoma has used a federal grant program to help its student parents cover those costs, but the college just found out it won't be getting that money this year. Dean Kelly is vice president for student success at Clover Park.
Dean Kelly
Some students just can't afford that without the the help, and so they may need to drop out.
Lauren Gallup
Kelly says a letter from the U.S. department of Education pointed to some training the college does to serve diverse populations as the reason for pulling the funding. The U.S. department of Education didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. For NPR News, I'm Lauren Gallup in Tacoma, Washington.

A school age child in the Los Angeles area has died due to a rare progressive brain disorder called sspe, a measles complication that can occur months or even years, years after the initial infection. Dr. Nava Yagane, the medical director for Vaccine Preventable Disease Control at the LA County Department of Public Health, tells ABC News not much is known about sspe, but the symptoms are universally fatal, especially for a young child.
Dr. Nava Yagane
It starts off with personality changes, emotional outbursts, and then there tends to be like motor changes, potentially seizures as well. And then from there it keeps on unfortunately progressing.
