Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Israel for a two day visit just one week after Israel bombed Hamas political leaders in the Gulf state's capital. Meanwhile, Arab leaders are gathering there to discuss a response to what Qatar's prime minister says is Israel's widening circle of War. NPR's Carrie Khan has more.
NPR Correspondent Carrie Khan
In remarks ahead of the regional response summit beginning Monday, Qatar's prime minister called on the international community to, quote, abandon double standards and punish Israel for its crimes. He also added the Israeli attack would not stop Qatar's efforts to mediate an end to the war in Gaza. In Israel, Rubio visited the Western Wall with Israel's prime minister, who equated the strength of the relationship with the US to the strong stones of the Jewish holy site. Rubio says he's expressing President Trump's displeasure with the attack on Doha while also showing unfettered support of Israel. Next week, the UN Is set to focus on the war in Gaza, with major countries expected to announce recognition of a Palestinian state. Kerry Khan News, Jerusalem.

Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is due in court this week. He's being held without bond. Meanwhile, Kirk's church in Phoenix held its first Sunday service since his death and Pier Sarah Ventri has more.
NPR Correspondent Sarah Ventri
Sunday morning's church service at Dream City Church in Phoenix emphasized the impact of Kirk's life and the ways in which this church community, which has strong links to Kirk's Turning Point usa, plans to continue his legacy. There was an open forum for people to ask questions, and conservative commentator Brandon Tatum was also in attendance.

These cowards. These cowards thought that they could end or eliminate the movement. They just made it bigger. They just made it stronger.

The Federal Reserve meets this week and it's expected to cut interest rates. NPR's Maria Aspen has more.
NPR Correspondent Maria Aspen
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to lower the costs of borrowing, and investors are already celebrating. All three major US Stock indices hit record highs last week despite mounting concerns over the health of the US Economy. The Fed has been trying to cool inflation by keeping interest rates relatively high. But now it's also trying to shore up the job market, which is showing signs of weakness, and cutting cutting rates could help. The decision will also be closely watched for political reasons. The Fed is supposed to be independent, but President Trump is trying to exert more control over it and has been pressuring the Fed to lower rates for months. Maria Aspen, NPR News, New York.

US Futures contracts are trading flat at this hour. You're listening to NPR News. Russia says Ukrainian drones struck one of its largest oil refineries, sparking a fire. No injuries were reported. Officials say the overnight attack on the refinery in the Leningrad region, which produces around 355,000 barrels of crude a day, follows weeks of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. Recent Ukrainian drone strikes and rising demand have caused gasoline shortages in Russia, and Moscow has paused gasoline exports in response. It's sorghum season in the US and that means sorghum syrup production. It's in full swing. Chad Barrett with member station WETS has more on this Appalachian tradition.
NPR Correspondent Chad Barrett
Sorghum is primarily grown for its grain, but the sweet variety of sorghum has stalks with a high sugar content that are perfect for turning into syrup. At the 26th annual Sorghum Festival, Oscar Wagner explains the syrup making process.
Oscar Wagner
We cut the stalks, pile them over there at the mill, and then the mule turns the mill and squeezes the sorghum from there.
NPR Correspondent Chad Barrett
It's a boiling down of the sorghum while skimming foam and impurities off until it reaches the right consistency. Wagner says the goal of the festival is to promote an understanding of how things used to be done and to encourage more hands on activities. The festival allows visitors to sample sorghum along with biscuits and gravy at the Tipton Haynes State Historic Site. For NPR News, I'm Chad Barrett in Johnson City, Tennessee.
