Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Giles Snyder. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro says it's a tragic and devastating day. A total of five police officers were shot today, three of them as they followed up on an investigation that authorities say was domestic related.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro
Grieve for the loss of life for three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth and served this country. We continue to pray for the full recovery of those who are dealing with their wounds.

The shooting happened in south central Pennsylvania in York county, not far from the Maryland line. Officials say the two wounded officers are list in critical but stable condition and that the shooter was killed by police. Earlier today in Pittsburgh, authorities took a suspect into custody after a driver rammed a car into security gates at the city's FBI building. Former CDC Director Susan Menarez was on Capitol Hill today telling members of a Senate panel her side of events that led to her firing. She said she was ousted because she refused to go along with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. S demands on vaccines and other issues. NPR's Selena Simmons Duffin kept tabs on the hearing.

She reached out to to this Senate committee expressing concerns about what she was being asked to do. And Kennedy found out.
Former CDC Director Susan Menares
He told me he could not trust me. And I told him if he could not trust me, he could fire me.

HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon sent me a statement. He denied that changes to the childhood vaccine schedule are already decided. He said, quote, susan Menares was tasked with restoring the CDC to its core mission after decades of bureaucratic inertia, politicized science, science and mission creep eroded its purpose and squandered public trust, and she refused to do it.

The vaccine advisory committee that Kennedy revamped is to open a two day meeting in Atlanta tomorrow to vote on new guidelines leading artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT says it's creating a version for users who are under 18. NPR's John Ruich reports. This comes as the company faces mounting pressure about AI's potential to harm young users.
NPR Reporter John Ruich
The parent company of ChatGPT, OpenAI, says it's developing a system to understand if a user is over or under 18. And then if the person is under 18, they will automatically be directed to what it calls a ChatGPT experience with age appropriate policies. It says that means blocking graphic sexual content and in rare cases of acute distress potentially involving law enforcement. To ensure safety, the company is also adding a way for parents to set blackout hours when kids will be unable to use ChatGPT altogether. The steps come in the wake of a lawsuit against OpenAI in August by the parents of a 16 year old California boy who say ChatGPT contributed to his suicide. The company has acknowledged that some of its safeguards are less reliable in long conversations. John Ruich, NPR News.

This is npr. Students at Utah Valley University began returning to classes today following last week's shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The courtyard where Kirk was shot remains blocked off. Yesterday, prosecutors said they'll seek the death penalty. They charged 22 year old Tyler Robinson with seven counts, including aggravated murder. A cargo spacecraft filled with 11,000 pounds of supplies and science equipment will not reach the International Space Station as scheduled today. Central Florida Public Media's Brendan Byrne reports. A vehicle experienced engine trouble after launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
NPR Reporter Brendan Byrne
Northrop Grumman's Cygnus XL spacecraft was making its way to the orbiting space station Tuesday when its engines cut out early. The maneuver was designed to raise the vehicle's orbit to rendezvous with the station. NASA is re evaluating that timeline as flight controllers come up with an alternative plan plan to deliver the supply craft. It's unclear just how far off track the spacecraft is. The Cygnus XL cargo vessel is carrying the heaviest load of supplies for the iss, delivered by a commercial company. It's packed with fresh food, hardware for science experiments and equipment to maintain the space station. If the spacecraft is unable to arrive at the station, those supplies could all be lost. Cygnus XL can't return to Earth without burning up in the atmosphere, since it's not designed to withstand the heat of re entry. For NPR News, I'm Brendan Byrne in Orlando.
