Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. Tens of thousands of people attended a memorial for conservative activist Charlie Kirk yesterday outside of Phoenix. Many attendees said they felt a personal connection to Kirk. From member station KJZZ in Phoenix, Wayne Shutske has more.

Vanessa Gomez and her husband stood in line outside of the memorial with their three young children. She said she had met Kirk's wife, Erica Kirk, and they bonded over their babies due to a no bag and no stroller policy. At the memorial, Gomez wore her son in a carrier and balanced diapers in her left hand. But she says dealing with those inconveniences was worth it.
Memorial Attendee
We grew up without our fathers, and we're trying to do right by our kids and give them good values. We think Charlie Kirk was such a good role model in all of that.
Wayne Schutzke
Another attendee, Tanya Ortiz, says she saw Kirk speak at her church in a Phoenix suburb. And Ricky Scoggin of Scottsdale, Arizona, says he attended the memorial as a form of therapy for his teenage son, Boston, who was in the crowd when Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at a Utah university. For NPR News, I'm Wayne Schutzke in Phoenix.

President Trump is offering more details about the agreement reached with China's president Xi Jinping said to allow video sharing app TikTok to continue operating in the United States. As NPR's John Ruich reports, Trump says the deal involves some titans of the media and tech world.
NPR Reporter
Trump said this about some of the people involved in the deal on Fox News on Sunday.
Donald Trump
They're very well known people, and Larry Ellison's one of them. He's involved. He's a great guy. Michael Dell is involved. Hate to tell you this, but a.
NPR Reporter
Man named Lachlan Ellison is co founder of the software company Oracle. Dell founded the computer company Dell Technologies. And Lacklustrel refers to Lachlan Murdoch, heir to Rupert Murdoch's media empire, which includes Fox News and the Wall Street Journal. A law passed last year bans TikTok in the United States unless control of the app is transferred from its Chinese parent company. The Trump administration has been trying to broker a deal, but the issue has been tied up in broader frictions that have dogged U.S. china relations. John Ruich, NPR News.

The president has extended the deadline for TikTok's Chinese parent company to sell the video app as required by Congress. Several times, the government of Turkey says it has canceled some retaliatory tariffs against the US that comes ahead of a meeting this week between the Turkish president and President Trump. From Istanbul, Duri Buskiran reports.
Dari Buskiran
The now canceled tariffs over imports like passenger cars, sunscreen and fruit had been in place since 2018. That's when Turkey retaliated against US tariffs on steel and aluminum enacted during the first Trump administration. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to meet with President Trump on Thursday. They're expected to finalize trade and military deals. Back In August, the US set a tariff rate of 15% on all Turkish imports. Turkey, however, did not retaliate. For NPR News, I'm Dari Busgaran, Istanbul.

You're listening to npr. Forecasters say Hurricane Gabrielle is gaining strength in the Atlantic Ocean, but is expected to sweep east of Bermuda this week. They don't expect it to reach North America. Just in time for fall, a 26 mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina has reopened. This comes nearly a year after Hurricane Helene devastated the region. The National Park Service says this marks the completion of the first phase of recovery to the roadway. Full restoration is targeted for fall of next year. Called America's favorite drive, the 469 mile Blue Ridge Parkway is a popular tourist destination for fall foliage. Alaska's Katmai national park and Preserve is home to the world's largest salmon run and some really fat bears. Twelve of them are vying to win the annual online Fat Bear Wheat competition. Alaska Public Media's Ava White has more.

Thousands of people around the world are watching webcams trained on the famously fat bears feasting on salmon and Katmai. Attention will ramp up this week for Fat Bear Week, where a dozen chunky contenders will face off in the bracket style voting competition for the title of Fattest Bear. Sarah Bruce is a ranger at the park and says the event is Katmai's hallmark event.

That Bear Week brings the park into the living room of anybody who wants to enjoy this place. Even just this past week, we had a Bear Camp fan who visited the park from New Zealand.
