Live from NPR News. I'm Dale Wilman. President Trump says he hopes more of his political enemies will be indicted. This comes after Trump handpicked a new federal prosecutor in Virginia who then returned an indictment against former FBI Director James Comey. He has been one of Trump's most outspoken critics. NPR's Tamara Keith reports.
Tamara Keith
Comey was indicted on two counts related to allegedly lying to Congress in testimony five years ago after Trump demanded that the Justice Department prosecute him. Trump says he expects more of the people who made his life miserable over the last eight years to be prosecuted.
Donald Trump
It's about justice, really. It's not revenge. It's about justice. It's also about the fact that you can't let this go on. They are sick, radical left people and they can't get away with it. And Comey, Comey was one of the people. He wasn't the biggest, but he's a dirty cop.
Tamara Keith
Comey says he is innocent, and he looks forward to proving it at trial. Tamara Keith, NPR News, the White House.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Friday said Israel will not stop fighting in Gaza until it's finished the job against Hamas. Speaking at the United nations, he gave a defiant speech despite growing international isolation for not ending the war there. Hamas says the speech was filled with lies. And Nadav Rudayev, who is relative as a hostage, called a speech heartbreaking.
Nadav Rudayev
80% of Israel's citizens want the war to come to an end and for all hostages to be released. And unfortunately, that's not one of the things that were addressed during Netanyahu's speech. So it's kind of heartbreaking that that wasn't one of the talking points.

Police in 14 African countries have arrested hundreds of suspects in a major sting operation. The officers were assisted by the international law enforcement agency Interpol. As NPR's Emmanuel Akinwatu reports, they targeted what they called Internet romance scams.
Emmanuel Akinwatu
Interpol said the operation took place between July and August and was focused on Internet romance scams like sextortion, where victims are extorted and blackmailed with explicit images or videos. The operation identified more than 1,000 victims who lost close to $3 million to the scams. Ghana's police arrested 68 suspects and recovered $70,000 in stolen funds. Police in Cote d' Ivoire also unraveled this extortion ring, which had more than 800 victims. Internet romance scams and sextortion are among the fastest growing online security threats in the world, and many victims are young people Based in the U.S. emmanuel Akimoto, NPR News. There you go.

Hurricane Umberto is now a Category 4 storm with winds gusting to 145 miles an hour. Weather officials say the storm could produce rip currents and life threatening surf when it passes Bermuda, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands this weekend. Another storm, meanwhile, is about 145 miles northwest of the eastern tip of Cuba and could reach the southern US by early next week. This is NPR News. The Federal Reserve's favorite inflation gauge grew slightly in August from a year earlier. The Commerce Department says the personal consumption expenditures price index was up 2.7% in August. That's slightly higher than the rate in August 2024. In Alaska, voting continues in the Fat Bear Week contest at Katmai national park and Preserve. The Original bracket of 12 is now reduced even as some familiar bears continue fattening up for the winter. From Alaska Public Media, Ava White reports.

One is number 32 or Chunk, a 1200 pound plus bear who was last year's runner up. Another is two time defending champion number 128, or Grazer. She'll be the first bear to achieve a consecutive three peat if she wins. Jessica Franzen is a teacher in Cabot, Arkansas. She's following that Bear Week with her students who are split between Grazer and Chunk.
Jessica Franzen
A lot of them were Grazer, a lot of them were Chunk. But to be fair, those are two really excellent choices. And when you show them against all the other bears, Chunk is massive. And Grazer kicks everybody's butt, so they love her for that. So it's hard to compete with those two.

Voting is closed for the weekend, but reopens Monday. That Bear Week ends Tuesday. You can vote online@explore.org For NPR News, I'm Ava White in Anchorage.

A retired Wall street financier was arrested Friday on charges that he lured dozens of women to a Central park penthouse where they were then sexually and physically abused. 70 year old Howard Rubin was arrested at his Connecticut home. He he later pleaded not guilty. His former personal assistant was arrested in Texas and faces similar charges. Prosecutors say the abuse took place between 2009 and 19. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
