I'm Dale Willman. The top congressional leaders from both parties are heading to the White House Monday to meet with President Trump. The meeting comes just one day before a September 30 deadline to fund the government or face a partial shutdown. As NPR's Barbara Sprunt reports, this comes after Trump canceled a meeting earlier this month with Democratic leaders.
Barbara Sprunt
Republicans want to pass a stopgap spending bill to fund the government through November 21st. Democrats want to negotiate in order to provide the necessary votes to put it over the finish line. Specifically on the issue of a set of expanded tax cuts from the Affordable Care Act. Those are set to expire at the end of the year. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told NBC's Meet the Press there's time to address that after the government is funded, keep.
Dale Willman
The government open, and let's have a conversation about those premium tax credits.
John Thune
I'm certainly open to that.
Barbara Sprunt
The Senate will attempt to pass the stopgap bill Monday evening. Barbara Sprent, NPR News, Washington.

City schools in Grand Blank, Michigan, will be closed on Monday following a shooting in a city church during services Sunday morning. Officials say a man identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford Robert rammed his pickup truck into the front door of the church and began shooting. Two people were killed in the attack and at least two others died when the church was set on fire. Township Police Chief William Renye offered praise for those involved with the incidents.
William Renye
I'd also like to acknowledge the heroism of not only the first responders, but the people who were inside that church at the time. They were shielding the children who are also present within the church, moving them to safety. Just hundreds of people just practicing their faith. Just extreme courage, brave. And that's the type of community that we are.

Police shot and killed the suspect at the scene. Police in Southport, North Carolina, have arrested a suspect in a mass shooting that left three, three people there dead and five others wounded on Saturday night. As NPR's Chris Arnold reports, the attack took place at a riverfront bar and music venue.
Chris Arnold
Police say the gunman started shooting from the water, driving his boat up alongside the open air dock front bar and opening fire with an assault rifle. They said the attack was premeditated, but that the victims appeared to be targeted randomly. Local District Attorney John David the thread.
John Thune
That connects everyone who's a victim in this case to this point just appears to be a love of having a good time. And sadly, a lot of the victims in this case appear to be people who are here on vacation.
Chris Arnold
Authorities say the shooter fled the scene in his boat, but that the Coast Guard spotted a man meeting his description. Half an hour later, police arrested area resident Nigel Edge, who's been charged with multiple counts of first degree murder and attempted murder. Chris Arnold's NPR News.

I'm Dale Willman, and you're listening to NPR News. Missouri has joined Texas in redrawing its congressional maps to protect the national Republican majority in the midterm elections. As St. Louis Public Radio's Rachel Lippman reports, Republican Governor Mike Kehope signed the bill on Sunday.
Rachel Lippman
The new map breaks up the Kansas City area district of Democrat Emmanuel Cleaver into three. That could give the GOP a chance to win seven of Missouri's eight seats, up from the six it currently holds. The bill signing was close to the media. The map already faces multiple legal challenges, and there is a possibility it never takes effect. Opponents are already gathering signatures to force a statewide vote. If they are successful, voters would have to approve the new districts. For NPR News, I'm Rachel Lipman in St. Louis.

President Trump told NBC this weekend that he'll be speaking at a meeting of top military leaders later this week. To Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the meeting and is bringing in hundreds of senior military leaders from around the world. Officials say the purpose is to highlight military accomplishments and to discuss the future of the Defense Department. Such a meeting is unusual in scope and creates numerous security concerns. Oregon has moved to number two in the latest AP college football rankings after a close win over Penn State on Saturday. Ole miss, meanwhile, climbed nine spots after beating number four LSU by the score of 24 to 19. Ohio State remains in number one, while Miami is number three and Oklahoma rounds out the top five. Texas A&M is in sixth, followed by Penn State, Indiana, Texas and Alabama. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
