LIVE from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingly. After two years of war in Gaza, President Trump says Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of his 20 point peace plan. It follows three days of indirect talks in Egypt. The announcement was welcomed by the families of the remaining hostages held by Hamas, as well as the UN Secretary General. NPR's Michelle Kellerman has more.

It begins with Hamas releasing all remaining hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, but also includes a long term plan to rebuild. Trump says he could travel to the region as early as this weekend and he's not ruling out a visit to Gaza.
Donald Trump
I may do that. We haven't decided exactly. I'll be going to Egypt most likely. That's where everybody is gathered right now, and we appreciate that very much. But I'll be making the rounds. As the expression goes, I probably will.
Michelle Kellerman
He says he will leave Saturday or Sunday. Michelle Kellerman, NPR News, Washington.

Tuesday marked the two year anniversary of the Hamas attack in southern Israel that left around 1,200 people dead and the abduction of 251 others. Since then, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, sparking allegations of genocide against Israel, which it denies. President Trump hosted a roundtable event at the White House yesterday where the focus was the leftist movement known as antifa. As NPR's Franco Ordonez reports, the president has designated Antifa as a domestic terror organization.
Franco Ordonez
President Trump was joined by Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, along with several conservative independent journalists who shared their stories of confrontations with demonstrators that they refer to as Antifa.
Donald Trump
It should be clear to all Americans that we have a very serious left wing terror threat in our country. Radicals associated with the domestic terror group Antifa.
Franco Ordonez
Last month, Trump signed an order to crack down on left wing groups after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, including targeting those who financially support them. Some studies show there has been an increase in left wing attacks in the US but they remain much lower than historical levels of right wing Franco, Ordonez and Pyrenewez. The White House.

A federal judge is expected to hear arguments today in a lawsuit filed by the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago to block President Trump from deploying National Guard troops to the Windy City to combat crime. The governor and Chicago's mayor call that deployment unnecessary and illegal. This is day nine of the government shutdown with no end in sight. Short term Republican and Democratic spending bills in the Senate once again were unable to get the 60 votes needed for passage yesterday. This is NPR News from Washington. Authorities in Southern California say they've made an arrest in connection with the Palisades fire that ravaged the Los Angeles area back in January. As Steve Futterman reports, the arson destroyed about 6,800 homes and other structures and left a dozen people dead.

Officials say the suspect, who was an Uber driver, maliciously set a fire on January 1st that was never completely extinguished and the following week reignited as the Palisades Fire. Bill Asale is the acting U.S. attorney in LA.

The fire continued to smolder and burn underground until on January 7, heavy winds caused this underground fire to surface.
Steve Futterman
Authorities say the suspect may have had an unusual interest in fires. He created AI images of a city burning and repeatedly played a French rap song whose video depicted a trash can being set ablaze. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in Los Angeles.

The last of 10 escapees from a jail in New Orleans has been recaptured. Authorities say 28 year old Derrick Groves was found hiding in a cross space beneath a home in Atlanta five months after the group of inmates escaped through a hole in a wall behind a toilet at the jail. Groves had been convicted of murder and was facing a potential life sentence. Atlanta's deputy police chief says Groves was located by a police dog. The New York Yankees have been eliminated from the Major League Baseball playoffs. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Yankees 52 yesterday to win the American League Divisional Series three games to one.
