[e-mail] Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded. The chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jurgen Vatness Friedness, announced the news.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 to Maria Corina Machado. She is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Machado is a 58 year old industrial engineer. She is living in hiding in Venezuela. She was blocked last year by Venezuelan courts from running for president against current leaders Nicolas Maduro. Maduro claimed a landslide victory last year in his reelection campaign. That was a vote that election observers rejected as neither free nor fair. Today is supposed to mark the start of the first phase of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and it is based on a plan proposed by President Trump. It calls for Hamas to release all hostages living and dead, and for Israel to free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and detainees. Federal Judge April Perry says deploying National Guard troops in Illinois would only add fuel to the fire. Under her ruling, the National Guard of the US Cannot be deployed within the state. The bloc will be in effect for 14 days. An appeal by the Trump administration is almost guaranteed. The Trump administration has said the National Guard is needed to protect an immigration processing facility outside of Chicago and protect ICE agents as they conduct arrests. Trump has said Chicago is a war zone, but protests have mostly been peaceful.
