In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition activist Maria Corita Machado. The Nobel Committee says Machado has been tireless in promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela against dictatorship. The Israeli military says the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel has come into effect. Israel says it's getting ready for the return of hostages and pulling back its troops in accordance with the plan. But Israel says it will be ready for any new threat. 200 US troops will be heading to Israel to help monitor and implement the Gaza ceasefire. NPR's Quill Lawrence reports. The troops will not be on the ground in Gaza.

US Troops with expertise in logistics will set up a civilian military coordination center in Israel to help with the expected flood of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The narrow strip of land has been subjected to intense bombardment for two years as the Israeli army sought to eliminate hamas after the October 7 surprise attack on Israel. That initial attack killed more than 1200 people, mostly Israeli civilians. The ensuing war has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, also mostly civilians. In a social media post, the White House says troops under U.S. central Command would coordinate with other nations in the region that will create an international stabilization force in Gaza, as outlined in President Trump's peace plan. A federal appeals court expressed skepticism about a lower courts order that blocks President Trump from deploying the Oregon National Guard to Portland. From Oregon Public Broadcasting, Conrad Wilson reports.

The Justice Department argues the president has sweeping authority to federalize and deploy the guard over Oregon Gov. Tina Kotak's objections. Trump wants 200 federalized National Guard members to help protect a U.S. immigration facility in Portland. Federal law allows the president to deploy the National Guard if there's an invasion, a rebellion, or if the president cannot enforce federal laws with regular forces. But the limitations of that authority were fiercely debated during this hearing. Attorneys with the state of Oregon and city of Portland acknowledged occasional violence at some ICE building protests, but argued that sending in the military is an overreach of power. For NPR News, I'm Conrad Wilson in Portland.

A federal judge has also temporarily blocked Trump from deploying National Guard troops in the Chicago area. The Justice Department has indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on two criminal counts involving bank fraud in a video statement. James alleges she was charged because she successfully sued Trump for lying about the value of his own properties.
Letitia James
These charges are baseless, and the president's own public statements make clear that his only goal is political retribution at any cost.

Trump just installed the prosecutor who brought charges against James. The same prosecutor indicted former FBI Director James Comey for allegedly lying to Congress. He says he's innocent. It's NPR. This is day 10 of the Federal government shutdown. The Senate has failed to agree on new spending bills offered yesterday by both Republicans and Democrats. The Monday is a federal holiday, so it doesn't appear that any resolution will be reached for several more days. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has started airing a video in airports across the country. It features Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. In the video, she's blaming Democrats for the shutdown. North Korea is hosting foreign leaders for a series of events, including today's military parade. Pyongyang is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the country's ruling Workers Party. NPR's Anthony Kuhn reports.

Leader Kim Jong Un presided over mass games, artistic performances and a ceremony marking the anniversary at Pyongyang's Mayday stadium on Thursday. In a speech, Kim pledged to build North Korea into an affluent land and a socialist paradise. He praised the country for developing both its economy and its international prestige while under the threat of foreign aggression. Foreign leaders attending the celebration include Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Russian ruling party chief Dmitry Medvedev, and Vietnamese ruling party chief Tho Lan. North Korea is expected to display its latest missiles and other weapons in a military parade. Anthony Kuhn, NPR News, Seoul.

In Peru, lawmakers have voted to throw President Dina Boluarte out of office. Lawmakers across political parties voted to oust her on grounds of permanent moral incapacity. Boluarte has been the target of anti government protests as crime has soared in Peru. This is NPR News.
