Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Stocks fell sharply Friday after President Trump threatened to impose even steeper tariffs on imports from China. That caused the dow to drop 878 points, or almost 2%. Then after the markets closed, he follow through on the threat, announcing a new additional 100% tariff. NPR's Scott Horsley has our reports.

President Trump posted his threat on social media after China imposed new restrictions on exports of rare earth materials. Trump described that as a hostile act that could clog commercial flows around the world. Trump said he'd been planning to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month at an Asia Pacific summit in South Korea, but he warned that meeting could be scrapped now. In addition to a 100% increase in tariffs next month, Trump warned he could hit back at China with export restrictions of his own. The tit for tat comes after a period when investors had been growing more sanguine that U S China trade tensions might not be as disruptive as initially feared. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

A new cease fire took effect in Gaza on Friday.
Greg Myhre
Israel's government officially approved the ceasefire plan around 1am Friday, and the first big step after that was for Israeli troops to pull back in Gaza, which they did by midday, though they still control about half the territory. Now. With Israel meeting this obligation, the clock is now on Hamas. The group has three days to release the 20 Israeli hostages still believed to be alive. This looks most likely to happen Monday. And when that takes place, Israel is to start freeing nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees.

That's NPR's Greg Myhre in Tel Aviv. Despite celebrations over this latest deal, Myre says a number of major questions still remain. Among them are whether and when Hamas might disarm and who will govern the area once Israeli troops fully pull out. An explosion at a military munitions plant has officials in Tennessee searching for 19 missing people. They've confirmed multiple deaths and are sifting through rubble at the facility, which is owned by Accurate Energetic Systems. Tony Gonzales, a member station wpln, has more.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis choked up at a press conference, calling the wreckage the most devastation he's seen in his 30 year career. He says that understanding what caused the blast will take time.

Do I see a short term explanation? No. Do I see us being here for many days? Yes, I do see that the powerful.

Explosion at the plant southwest of Nashville obliterated one building and could be felt as far as 40 miles away. Neighbors say they have grown accustomed to smaller test blasts, but knew immediately that this explosion was something different. The company, AES, handles explosive products for the military, demolition firms and the aerospace industry. For NPR News, I'm Tony Gonzalez in Nashville.

And you're listening to NPR News. Mass firings of federal workers are now underway. The White House made the announcement on Friday as the Trump administration tries to put more pressure on Democrats to end the government shutdown. In a court filing Friday, lawyers for the government said some 4,200 employees will begin receiving notices starting October 10th. Hardest hit are the Departments of Health and Human Services, treasury and Education. Singer and bassist John Lodge of the Moody Blues has died. His family announced his death on social media but did not give a cause. He was 82 years old. NPR's Elizabeth Blair has this appreciation.

John Lodge wrote some of the Moody Blues biggest hits. Lodge was born in 1943 in Birmingham, England. He got hooked on American musicians like Little Richard and Buddy Holly. He and his friend Ray Thomas were in a band called El Riot and the Rebels, before later joining the Moody Blues. The Moody blues sold some 70 million albums worldwide. This statement from his family says that John Lodge was never happier than being on stage. Elizabeth Blair, NPR News.

The United nations says fighting in western Sudan has killed at least 53 civilians and wounded more than 60 others. The fighting took place in and around a refugee camp housing people who were forced to flee their homes. Officials say the paramilitary Rapid Support forces used drone and artillery strikes in the attack. More than a dozen people were killed by shelling of a hospital in that camp.
