Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. President Trump says he's moving ahead with plans to send National Guard troops to San Francisco despite pushback from local leaders who call it a political stunt. NPR's Luke Garrett has more.

Trump has ordered National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. memphis, Chicago and Portland. The president tells Fox News he is adding San Francisco to the list.

California State Senator Scott Weiner responded directly on X, saying, quote, we don't want your invading army or ski mask secret police. Trump has faced legal challenges in Chicago and Portland, where federal judges have temporarily barred his National Guard deployments. But Trump says he has another tool.

Former New York Congressman George Santos is speaking out two days after being released from prison. NPR's Windsor Johnston reports. President Trump commuted the Republican sentence, called calling it excessive.

George Santos had pleaded guilty to fraud and aggravated identity theft and was serving a seven year sentence. In an interview on cnn, Santos said he's grateful to get a second chance.
