Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine overnight with missiles and drones. And NPR's Hanna Palomarenko reports from Kyiv. Ukrainian officials say at least six people were killed and dozens of others were wounded.
Hanna Palomarenko
The Ukrainian state Emergency Service posted a video in which a drone can be heard flying during a rescue operation in the capital. The Russian attack continued until morning. In addition to residential areas that came under fire, Russians targeted energy infrastructure. The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy announced emergency power outages in most regions. With the onset of cold weather, Russia has increased the number of strikes on energy infrastructure, coal enterprises and oil and gas industry facilities. Hanna Polomarenko, NPR News, Kyiv.

A new global cancer survey contains bad news for Lebanon. The country has seen the highest surges in both the frequency of new cancer cases and the number of cancer deaths anywhere in the world. Reporter Ari Daniel has details.

I'm in the middle of Beirut, and there are cars and trucks and motorcycles everywhere. There are various reasons why cancer is up in Lebanon. Air pollution is a big one. Then there's the chemicals used in agriculture. But the biggest risk factor is smoking. Ali Moqdad is co author of the report published in the Lancet.
Rick Knecht
There is no more taboo about smoking. Everybody smokes. Kids smoke in front of their parents.
Ari Daniel
One key lawmaker believes any kind of government response will take time, but Mokdad says Lebanon must act now to support people's health. For NPR News, I'm Ari Daniel. Beirut, Lebanon.
