LIVE from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. New York mayoral candidate Zoran Mandani rallied supporters Sunday night for an election that's a little more than a week away. Speaking at a small stadium in the borough of Queens is a movement of the masses.

We do not get to determine the scale of a crisis. Our choice is how we respond. Let us win a city hall that works for those straining to buy groceries, not those straining to buy our democracy.

Mondani was joined by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. The partisan redistricting effort President Trump has kicked off continues with the Commonwealth of Virginia. Lawmakers will be holding a special session this week. NPR's Mara Liasson has more.

Virginia Democrats will discuss redrawing the state's congressional district maps to favor Democrats. This follows an unusual mid cycle partisan redistricting effort by Republicans in Texas, North Carolina and Missouri after President Trump called on red states with trifectas, that is with Republican governors and state legislatures in the same state to create more seats favor favorable to his party. Three other blue states, California, Illinois and Maryland, have responded in kind and are looking at ways to increase seats favorable to Democrats. Normally, redistricting happens every 10 years after the census is taken, but that custom appears to be yet another political norm cast aside during the Trump era. Mara Liasson, NPR News.

The president of the Palestinian Authority has appointed an apparent successor. The move comes as uncertainty over the future role of the Palestinian leadership in the Israeli occupied West bank grows. NPR's Daniel Estrin has more from Tel Aviv.
E
Mahmoud Abbas has been the internationally recognized Palestinian leader for 20 years. There have long been questions of who would replace him. Now, just weeks away from his 90th birthday, Abbas has decreed that if he is unable to fulfill his duties, his role would be taken over temporarily by his deputy. Hussein is Sheikh. Many Palestinians see him as being friendly to Israel. There's no telling if he would remain in the president's role indefinitely. This decree comes as the Palestinian leadership in the west bank has been sidelined while the US and other countries work on a plan for post war Gaza. President Trump told Time magazine he wasn't sure if Abbas had a future leadership role for the Palestinians. Daniel Estrin, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

Asian market shares rallied on Monday with Japan's Nikkei 225, topping 50,000 for the very first time. Talk of trade deals at the ASEAN meeting over the weekend contributed to the upbeat sentiment. Shares also jumped in South Korea and China. Hong Kong's Hang sen was up by 1%. You're listening to NPR News. It's going to be a busy week for the stock markets with the Federal Reserve holding its latest policy meeting. And as NPR's Rafael Nam reports, big tech companies such as Alphabet will also be reporting their earnings on Wednesday.

The Federal Reserve is expected to lower interest rates by a quarter percentage point, delivering its second consecutive cut. That's after data last week showed inflation running slightly lower than expected. But that inflation report will be the only government data the Fed will have for now as the shutdown continues. That means the Fed is in a bit of a blind period as it navigates an uncertain economy. AI will also be the main focus this week as a bunch of big tech companies such as Meta and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, report the latest quarterly results. Rafael Nam, NPR News.

The strike at three Midwest plants owned by Boeing is continuing after striking machinists turned down the company's latest offer. 51% of striking members voted against the deal on Sunday. The plants developed military aircraft and weapons. The union says Boeing is still not addressing the issues of wages and retirement benefits. Some 32,200 machinists are on strike. Anime hit the top spot at North American box offices this weekend. Chainsaw man is based on a manga series about a demon hunter. It brought in 17 and a quarter million dollars at ticket booths. Black Phone 2 dropped to second with 13 million and the ROM com regretting you earned 12.85 million. The Springsteen biopic landed in fourth with $9.1 million in ticket sales. I'm Dale Wilman, NPR News.
