LIVE from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. Federal food aid for some 42 million Americans runs out on Saturday when the government shutdown enters its second month. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries claims that cruelty is the reason why Republicans refuse to include an extension of health care tax subsidies in a bill to end the shutdown.
Hakeem Jeffries
Mike Johnson admitted that Republicans are willing to starve hungry children in this country and take away SNAP benefits starting on November 1st so they can pressure Democrats into gutting the health care of the American people.

House Republican leader John Thune insists that lawmakers must vote to end the shutdown before the GOP will consider extending health care subsidies. Some Americans in over a dozen states could see a drop in their credit scores if the Trump administration completes efforts to allow medical debt. On consumer reports, the move would repeal a Biden era rule that allowed states to impose their own credit reporting bans. President Trump has agreed to lower tariffs on auto imports from Korea, but WABE's Marlon Hyde reports a major US hub for vehicle imports and exports has seen a significant drop in volume because of tariffs.
Marlon Hyde
Tariffs on Korean automobiles and auto parts are set to drop as import taxes are hitting the auto industry and Georgia's Port of Brunswick ports. Officials in Georgia say last month's 30% year over year drop in volume was due to automakers reducing production and and shipments in the state. Marty Parker is a supply chain expert at the University of Georgia.
Marty Parker
The Brunswick port is going to be trending downwards, and I think Savannah is probably not far behind it if the economy is in fact beginning to slow and prices are beginning to go up.
Marlon Hyde
Parker says U.S. automakers are struggling as layoffs in the car industry point to a rough start to next year. For NPR News, on Martin Hod in.

Atlanta, former Governor Andrew Cuomo continues to rack up big endorsements in the New York City mayor's race, but he's still behind newcomer Zoram Mamdani. NPR's Brian Mann reports.
Brian Mann
This race is widely seen as a battle between the Democratic Party's old guard, represented by Cuomo, and the new guard, represented by Mamdani. During these final days, Cuomo is touting a growing list of endorsements from moderates, including Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Cuomo Pomo says Their backing reflects his pro business ideas and long experience. But he resigned the governor's office in 2021 after a sexual misconduct scandal. Mandani, the relative newcomer, is a state assemblyman and a Democratic socialist whose campaign has focused on affordability. The latest polls show him holding a big lead. Mandani's campaign says a massive get out the vote effort by young volunteers will continue through Tuesday. Brian Mann, NPR News, New York.

This is npr. Communities in the northern Caribbean are assessing damage from Hurricane Melissa, now blamed for at least 40 deaths. The storm is causing hurricane conditions on Bermuda, where coastal flooding is possible. The effects of Melissa are still being felt in the portions of Cuba, Haiti, the Bahamas and the Turk and Caicos Islands. New research suggests that there were more than one more kind of tyrannosaur, T. Rex. Ari Daniel has details.
Ari Daniel
The Dueling Dinosaurs fossil consists of two entangled skeletons, a Triceratops and a small tyrannosaur, beautifully preserved. Most researchers have believed the tyrannosaur was a juvenile T. Rex, but as soon.
Lindsay Zano
As we started actually studying this specimen, we realized there were a lot of red flags.
Ari Daniel
Lindsay Zano is head of paleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The animal had larger hands and more teeth than T. Rex and was fully grown when it died. This was Nanotyrannus lancensis, a different tyrannosaur species whose existence was long dismissed by most paleontologists. In other words, T. Rex has been dethroned. There were other tyrannosaurs. For NPR News, I'm Ari Daniel.
