Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. Federal funding for food assistance will end tomorrow. That's due to the federal government shutdown. Some governors are mobilizing National Guard troops to help food banks and pantries. David May of the Los Angeles Regional Food bank says the troops will have a visible role.
A
They're helping to prepare the food, glean the food, make sure it's healthy and safe as we distribute it out into the community.
B
In Missouri, the United way of Greater St. Joseph is bracing for higher demand from families who need food. Volunteer Marquise Johnson says now is the time for Americans to help other people.
C
And so I have seen the impact that this is going to have on communities and families around. And it's really tragic. And so any type of way that you can give back or serve any type of community, you need to like, it's really an advocate for service right now.

Several governors have declared states of emergency to provide some stopgap funding for people facing food shortages. But the governors warn it won't be enough. Congressional Democrats are criticizing the Trump administration as the US Military continues targeting suspected drug boats off Venezuela and in the Eastern Pacific. NPR's Quill Lawrence says Democratic lawmakers are being excluded from briefings on the airstrikes.
D
The Trump administration has labeled alleged narco traffickers as illegal combatants. That's the legal justification for military strikes against more than a dozen small boats, killing more than 60 people without trial or presenting evidence. But Senate Democrats say they have been excluded from a White House briefing on the issue. And House Democrats say the Pentagon abruptly pulled its lawyers from a classified briefing of the Armed Services Committee. The White House says Democrats are soft on narco trafficking. Democrats say President Trump is using the military for politics, including making campaign style partisan speeches on military bases, which conflicts with the US Military's centuries of apolitical tradition. Republican lawmakers in Ohio are the latest to join a redistricting effort that aims to send more GOP candidates to the U.S. congress. The deal with Democrats could avoid a more ugly redistricting fight. But from Ohio Public Media, Sarah Donaldson reports.
E
The map introduced by the Ohio Redistricting Commission tilts districts in Cincinnati and Toledo, further right, and in Akron, further left, giving Democratic Representatives Greg Landsman and Marcy Kaptur tougher races while easing off Amelia Sykes. It would also make several other already red seats even friendlier to the GOP. Here's Governor Mike DeWine.
F
This is not Republicans dictating. It is Republicans picking up the Democrat votes that are needed.
E
Both sides are facing blowback for the deal making since the map would not be subject to a ballot referendum. But at least one of those now Republican leaning seats could swing the other way. For NPR News, I'm Sarah Donaldson in Columbus.

You're listening to NPR News. From Washington. FBI Director Kash Patel says his agency foiled a potential terrorist attack that was supposed to happen this Halloween weekend. Writing online, Patel said that details would be revealed later. He praised FBI agents for their work. As nations around the world cope with declining birth rates, the Greek government has rolled out a multi billion dollar tax cut package. It's designed to encourage young Greek women and men to have more children. NPR's Sarah McCammon has more.
G
Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pirakakis says the Greek economy has largely recovered from the financial crisis that began in 2009. In an interview with N, he said the government now worries about its aging and shrinking population.
H
This is an existential problem for us. It's an existential challenge for us. And we need to create the positive tailwinds to counter the negative headwinds of the effects of our demographic curve.
G
The new financial incentives include tax breaks for younger workers and people in rural areas and lower rates for Greek parents who have more children. Sarah McCammon, NPR News.
