Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. The Senate held a rare Saturday session this weekend in hopes of bringing an end to the federal government shutdown, but the Senate adjourned Saturday evening and the shutdown continues. Democrats want a one year extension of health care tax credits, but Republicans say that's a non starter. Majority Leader John Thune says only one thing will get government workers back on the job.
John Thune
And I urge my colleagues to support a clean, continuing resolution so we can start a real discussion to address their health care mess, get back to the regular appropriations process, and above all, finally provide relief to the American people.

The record shutdown is now in its 40th day. Many local workers at some US military bases in Europe are being affected by the US government shutdown. In Germany, the government is covering salaries for some 11,000 workers who are not being paid. In Italy, about 2,000 workers haven't received a paycheck since September, and hundreds of workers in Portugal have also not been paid. Flight delays and cancellations continue to pile up across the U.S. following the FAA's order to reduce air traffic. The delays included Washington, D.C. s Reagan National Airport, where NPR's Stephen Fowler reports during his own delayed travel.

The Israeli prime minister's office says forensic tests show the latest body returned to Israel is that of a retired Israeli military officer. An Israeli hostage forum says Lior Rudayev was a 61 year old volunteer ambulance driver. He was killed on October 7, 2023, after a fierce battle with Hamas led militants at the gates of the kibbutz where he lived in southern Israel. In exchange, the Gaza Health Ministry says it's received the bodies of 15 Palestinians held by Israel, but their names are not yet known. The ministry says only about a third of the total number of Palestinian bodies returned under this ceasefire have been identified amid a shortage of DNA tests in Gaza. U.S. aviation officials are ordering McDonnell Douglas MD11 planes not be flown until they can be inspected. That's after a deadly crash at a UPS global aviation hub in Kentucky killed 14 people on Tuesday. UPS and FedEx said Friday they're grounding their MD11 planes out of an abundance of caution. The Federal Aviation Administration followed with a directive Saturday to ground the planes until inspection and correction of any problems are taken care. In the Louisville crash, the jets left engine detached during takeoff. Those killed included three pilots of the MD11, which was bound for Honolulu. Ukrainian authorities say the Russian drone hit an apartment building in eastern Ukraine, and four people have been killed along with 12 others who were wounded. You're listening to NPR News. Police in Indonesia have found explosive powder in writings in the home of a 17 year old who is suspected of involvement in the bombing of a mosque at a high school on Friday. The attack took place in Jakarta. The suspect was among the 54 people injured in two explosions. He is recovering a nearby hospital. Police say the suspect had reportedly been bullied, and they're investigating where the attack was. In revenge, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick says he's donating $1 million from his campaign funds to bring Turning Point USA chapters to all Texas colleges and high schools. Texas Public Radio's Jerry Clayton has more.

Turning Point USA is the group founded by Charlie Kirk, who was killed at a college campus rally in Utah. Patrick said the idea came during a conversation with Turning Point leaders. In a statement, he also praised young conservatives for challenging leftist echo chambers and said campuses should foster debate, not indoctrination. There are more than 1200 school systems in over 200 colleges in the state, and Patrick says he wants Turning Point USA chapters in all of them. Patrick posted the comments Friday on social media. He's been a frequent guest at Turning Point events in the past few weeks. I'm Jerry Clayton in San Antonio.

Garrick Higgo tied the course record for a single round Saturday, shooting an 11 under 61 at the PGA tournament underway in Mexico. He took a one stroke lead over Carson Young at the El Cardinal at Diamante course in Los Cabos. Higgins had an eagle and five straight birdies on the front nine and four more birdies on the back. Ben Griffin, Trevor Cohn and Chad Ramey are all two strokes back going into Sunday's final round. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
