Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Jeanine Hurst. President elect Donald Trump has chosen the head of a pro Trump think tank to be his U.S. agricultural secretary. As NPR Sarah McCammon reports, Brooke Rollins is slated to lead the agency responsible for the nation's farm and nutrition programs.
Sarah McCammon
Brooke Rollins worked for Trump's first administration, most notably as director of the Domestic Policy Council. After leaving the White House, Rollins was among a group of senior advisors who set up the America First Policy Institute to promote Trump's ideas. She's now the nonprofit group's president and CEO. Rollins has an agriculture degree from Texas A and M and a law degree from the University of Texas. The US Department of Agriculture has around 100,000 employees and oversees several large programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and farm subsidies. Israeli airstrikes hit the heart of Lebanon's capital early this morning, killing at least 15 people, injuring dozens of others. Israeli reports say it was targeting a Hezbollah leader in an area of central Beirut away from the group's base of operations in the city's southern suburbs. NPR's Lauren Frayer has more from Beir.
Lauren Frayer
The Israeli military often issues evacuation orders before it strikes, but this one came without warning at 4am local time, a series of huge blasts that leveled an eight story building and shook people in their beds a mile away. Beirut still smells of explosives. Hours later, local TV shows a massive crater, one building collapsed and others on fire all around it. For blocks, balconies are blown out and buildings covered in soot. Lebanon's national news agency says Israel used bunker buster bombs in this strike. Israel says its airstrikes target Hezbollah militants. They've primarily hit across Lebanon's south and east, where the group has strongholds. But strikes like this in central parts of the capital are becoming more frequent. Lauren Fryer, NPR News, Beirut.

Amazon says it's investing another $4 billion into the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. The move comes amid the ongoing battle to lead the AI future in Silicon Valley. NPR's Bobby Allen has more.
Bobby Allen
Amazon's big bet on AI startup anthropic doubles its investment in the company. Its language model Claude, competes with ChatGPT from rival company OpenAI, and the race is on Microsoft back OpenAI. Amazon backed Anthropic and Elon Musk's Xai, with support from Google, are locked in an AI standoff. The money pouring into AI ventures is fueling a search for the next ChatGPT, an AI powered commercial product with mass appeal. Much of the big tech investment allows AI startups to access what's called computer or the immense amount of power it takes to run AI systems. It all comes as regulators in Washington probe into leading AI companies scrutiny that may diminish when President elect Donald Trump enters office in January. Bobby Allen, NPR News.

This is NPR News. Hollywood might have another Barbenheimer style double feature this weekend. NPR's Bob Mondello says the industry is hoping Gladiator 2 plus Wicked Part 1 equals Glicked.
Bob Mondello
Personally, I prefer Wickiator, but it'll be good for cinemas either way. Like Barbie, Wicked is expected to appeal to women and girls, while Gladiator leans male, as did Oppenheimer. Early estimates have Wicked living up to its hit song, popular I know about Poppy Hoodler looking at almost $120 million for the weekend, while Gladiator 2, this is about survival, should take in about half that. Usually when two Hollywood blockbusters bang heads in the same weekend, one of them suffers. But patrons doing a Barbenheimer double feature actually boosted both films last year. The industry hopes the Wicked Gladiator combo will also be defying gravity. But after a lackluster fall, cinema owners will be relieved if they just reach current estimates. Bob Mondello, NPR News.

Florida's surgeon general says communities in the state should not add fluoride to drinking water. Joseph Ladapo says that's because of what he calls the neuropsychiatric wrist that's associated with fluoride exposure. He does acknowledge in the guidance, though, that fluoride has long been proven to reduce tooth decay by strengthening teeth. But he says there are possible safety concerns related to systemic fluoride exposure. President elect Trump's pick for Health and Human Services, Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Has said he would advise against fluoride being added to US Water systems. I'm Janine Herbst, NPR News.

NPR News Now: Episode Summary – November 23, 2024, 5 PM EST
On November 23, 2024, NPR News Now delivered a comprehensive five-minute update covering significant developments in politics, international affairs, technology, entertainment, and public health. Below is a detailed summary of the key topics discussed in the episode, complete with notable quotes and proper attributions.
Overview: In a decisive move, President-elect Donald Trump has selected Brooke Rollins, the head of a pro-Trump think tank, to serve as the United States Secretary of Agriculture. This appointment signals the administration's direction in managing the nation’s agricultural and nutrition programs.
Details: Jeanine Hurst introduced the news at 00:20, highlighting Rollins' background and qualifications. Sarah McCammon elaborated on Rollins' experience, noting her previous role as director of the Domestic Policy Council during Trump's first term and her leadership at the America First Policy Institute.
Notable Quote: Brooke Rollins’ extensive experience in agricultural policy was emphasized: “Rollins has an agriculture degree from Texas A&M and a law degree from the University of Texas,” (00:38).
Implications: Rollins will oversee critical programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and farm subsidies, managing an agency with approximately 100,000 employees.
Overview: Early in the morning, Israeli forces conducted airstrikes in Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 people and injuries to dozens. The strikes targeted a Hezbollah leader, intensifying tensions in the region.
Details: Jeanine Hurst reported the incident at 01:16, setting the stage for Lauren Frayer’s on-the-ground coverage from Beirut. Frayer described the suddenness and devastation of the attack, noting that it occurred without prior evacuation orders.
Notable Quote: Lauren Frayer vividly recounted the scene: “Beirut still smells of explosives. Hours later, local TV shows a massive crater, one building collapsed and others on fire all around it” (01:35).
Context: The Israeli military typically issues evacuation orders before striking, but this operation at 4 AM local time was executed abruptly. The use of bunker buster bombs and the location in central Beirut indicate a strategic effort to dismantle Hezbollah's influence beyond their traditional strongholds in southern and eastern Lebanon.
Significance: The increase in central Beirut strikes suggests a broader strategy against Hezbollah, potentially escalating the conflict in the region.
Overview: Amazon has announced a substantial investment of $4 billion in the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, underscoring its ambition to dominate the AI landscape alongside other tech giants.
Details: Jeanine Hurst introduced the story at 02:20, followed by Bobby Allen's analysis. The investment marks a doubling of Amazon’s support for Anthropic, whose language model, Claude, is a key competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Notable Quote: Bobby Allen highlighted the competitive landscape: “Amazon backed Anthropic and Elon Musk's Xai, with support from Google, are locked in an AI standoff” (02:35).
Industry Impact: This move positions Amazon alongside Microsoft and Google in the race to develop commercially viable AI products with widespread appeal. The influx of capital is vital for AI startups to access the necessary computational power to advance their technologies.
Regulatory Context: The investment occurs amid increasing scrutiny from Washington regulators. There is speculation that regulatory pressures on AI companies may ease with Trump’s potential return to office in January.
Overview: Hollywood is gearing up for a weekend likely to feature a double blockbuster event akin to last year's "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, this time pairing "Gladiator 2" with "Wicked Part 1."
Details: Jeanine Hurst introduced the entertainment segment at 03:17, with Bob Mondello providing further insights. "Gladiator 2," expected to attract a male audience similar to "Oppenheimer," is paired with "Wicked," which targets women and girls, paralleling the appeal of "Barbie."
Notable Quote: Bob Mondello shared his personal preference while addressing box office expectations: “Personally, I prefer Wickiator, but it'll be good for cinemas either way” (03:33).
Box Office Projections: Early estimates suggest "Wicked" could generate nearly $120 million during its opening weekend, while "Gladiator 2" is projected to earn about half that amount. Despite the usual competition between major releases, last year's double feature boosted both films' performances, and the industry hopes for a similar outcome.
Industry Sentiment: Cinema owners are optimistic, especially after a challenging fall season, and hope that the "Wicked" and "Gladiator 2" combination will succeed without one film overshadowing the other.
Overview: Florida’s Surgeon General, Joseph Ladapo, has issued guidance advising communities to discontinue the addition of fluoride to drinking water, citing potential neuropsychiatric risks despite acknowledging fluoride's benefits in reducing tooth decay.
Details: Jeanine Hurst brought this public health issue to attention at 04:22, including references to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s stance on water fluoridation. Ladapo emphasized concerns about systemic fluoride exposure while recognizing its dental health benefits.
Notable Quote: Ladapo explained his position: “There are possible safety concerns related to systemic fluoride exposure” (04:22).
Policy Implications: This guidance aligns with the upcoming administration's potential policies, as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the nominated Secretary for Health and Human Services, has indicated he would also advise against adding fluoride to U.S. water systems.
Public Health Debate: While the benefits of fluoride in preventing tooth decay are well-documented, Ladapo and Kennedy's positions highlight ongoing debates about the broader health implications of fluoride usage in public water supplies.
