Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. New York City Mayor Elect Zoran Mamdani called his meeting Friday with President Trump productive. A White House official now says he thinks Trump doesn't plan to withhold federal funding from his hometown. NPR's Luke Garrett reports.
Luke Garrett
The chummy Oval Office meeting shocked political onlookers, but Mamdani tells NBC News he still believes Trump is a fascist.
Zoran Mamdani
That's something that I've said in the past. I say it today.
Luke Garrett
On the economy and affordability. Mamdani says he and Trump found common ground.
Zoran Mamdani
I found in the meeting that I had with the president a productive one and a meeting that came back again and again to the central themes of the campaign that we ran.
Luke Garrett
Trump's top economic adviser Kevin Hassett tells CNN the president no longer wants to act on his threat to curb federal funding from New York City.
Zoran Mamdani
Well, it feels like he doesn't mean it now, and I guess we'll have to wait and see what Mamdani does.
Luke Garrett
Hassett says the White House was reassured by Mamdani's choice to retain the current police commissioner, Jessica Tisch. Luke Garrett, NPR News, Washington.

Hamas sent a delegation to Egypt to discuss the ceasefire with Israel in Gaza. And since the agreement took effect last month, Israeli strikes in Gaza have killed more than 300 Palestinians. And Pierce Kat Lonsdorf has more.
Pierce Kat Lansdorf
A Hamas official, speaking on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly, told NPR that a delegation from the group met with mediators in Cairo to, quote, discuss the Israeli violations of the ceasefire. Israel and Hamas have repeatedly accused each other of violating the fragile ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire is holding, but advancement toward a lasting peace remains stalled. Over the weekend, Israel said Hamas militants threatened Israeli troops and responded with a series of strikes across the enclave, killing more than 20 people. Israel says several were Hamas officials. 339 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza during this ceasefire, according to health officials, including more than 60 children. Kat Lansdorf, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney doesn't appear to be in any rush to resume trade talks with Washington. As Dan Carpentuk reports, he made the suggestion While attending the G20 leaders meeting in Johannesburg.
Dan Carpentuk
On the sidelines of the talks, Carney said he would resume discussions with the U.S. quote, when it's appropriate, adding that he didn't have any pressing issue to talk about with President Trump. Carney said his government is busy with Canada's future and with building new trade partnerships around the globe. Trump abruptly halted trade talks with Canada last month after an Ontario ad that featured the voice of former President Ronald Reagan saying tariffs do not work in the long term. Ottawa was in talks to try to lower US Import tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos. Carney said he is open to dialogue with Washington and that there will be conversations with Trump, most likely in the next couple of weeks. For NPR News, I'm Dan karpenchuk in Toronto.

In Nigeria, officials say 50 of the more than 300 students kidnapped from a boarding school on Friday have escaped and and returned home. NPR's Jewell Bright reports the students escaped and have been reunited with their families.

Officials of the Christian association of Nigeria say the 50 students aged 10 to 18, escaped individually after they were taken from their Dorms at the St. Mary's Catholic School in Niger State on Friday. No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction, and authorities say a massive search and rescue operation is underway. The attack is one of Nigeria's biggest school abductions since the 2014 kidnapping of 260 Chibok schoolgirls by Boko Haram militants. Nigeria has seen a wave of attacks in recent days targeting schools and places of worship. 25 students were taken from another boarding school in a neighboring state. Gunmen also attacked a church where they killed two worshippers and abducted 38 others. Nigeria's President announced today that all worshippers abducted in the church had been rescued.
