Live from NPR News. I'm Lakshmi Singh. A federal judge has dismissed the indictments against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, ruling that Lindsey Halligan, a U.S. attorney in Virginia that brought the indictments, has been unlawfully appointed. Here's NPR's Kerry Johnson.

The Trump administration installed Lindsey Halligan as U.S. attorney in Virginia in late September, soon after the prosecutor already in that job expressed doubts about moving forward with charges against prominent critics of President Trump. Now a federal judge has found Halligan's appointment defective under the Constitution. The ruling means that indictments Halligan won against the former FBI director and the sitting New York attorney general are dismissed. For now, the Justice Department has the option to appeal and could try to revive both cases. Lawyers for Jim Comey and Tish James are challenging the indictments on several other grounds. The Pentagon says it's opening an investigation into Arizona US Senator Mark Kelly in the wake of a video featuring six Democratic lawmakers urging service members not to comply with illegal orders. The administration has faced legal questions about deadly airstrikes on boats suspected of drug smuggling in the Caribbean and deployment of National Guard troops domestically. For days, the New Orleans area has been preparing for an influx of Federal immigration agents. U.S. customs and Border Patrol has not formally said whether it's actually sending in agents or when, but Michael McEwen with member station WWNO reports fears spreading across immigrant communities have seen heavy federal enforcement in Raleigh, Charlotte, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

A lot of our economy here is really braced by immigrant labor, and that's really across all sectors. And then even without an official announcement about this operation, I've really seen this sense of fear and foreboding among some communities, and it's really palpable at this point. And some immigration advocates in the city have already begun providing training on how to interact with federal agents.
