Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. President elect Trump and his transition teams heading into the holiday season with strong public support, according to the latest CBS News poll. It finds a majority of Americans surveyed are excited or at least optimistic about what he will do as president come January. And CBS reports there's a net positive response about Trump's elections for cabinet posts. NPR's Deirdre Walsh reports on the confirmation process laid out by Republican incoming Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso.
Deirdre Walsh
All these nominees are expected to go through some background checks in some form, and Barrasso said they're going to start hearings on January 3, and he expects some votes on nominees. Nominees on Inauguration Day. Even if three Republicans break and vote against a nominee, Vice President J.D. vance, who will also be serving as president of the Senate, can break a tie. If four Republicans oppose a nominee, they will fail.

NPR's Deirdre Walsh. A hearing set this hour in Los Angeles to consider a request to reduce the life without parole sentence of Eric and Lyle Menendez. The brothers were convicted of first degree murder in the 1989 slayings of their parents. Here's Steve Futterman.
Steve Futterman
The request comes as attorneys say there is new evidence supporting the brothers claim that they were sexually molested by their father, Jose Menendez. Attorney Mark Garagos is representing the brothers. Under the current state of the law, they're eligible to have, and the court.
Mark Garagos
Has the discretion to recall the Al Wapa sentence.
District Attorney
Life without parole.
Steve Futterman
The district attorney supports reducing the sentence to 50 years to life. With the more than 30 years the brothers have already served, that would make them eligible for parole. Complicating the issue is the fact that the current DA Is set to be replaced next month, and the new DA says he needs to review the case before announcing his position. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in Los Angeles.

In Lithuania's capital, one person was killed today when a DHL cargo plane skidded into a residential building as it was attempting to land. Esme Nicholson has details.

The DHL freight plane was approaching Vilnius International Airport this morning when it came down, damaging an apartment building on Impal. Lithuanian rescue services say they were able to evacuate 12 residents from the building and nobody on the ground is hurt. The plane had taken off from DHL's central hub in Leipzig, Germany, where earlier this year packages caught fire. Parcels at warehouses in the UK And Poland have also recently caught fire. European intelligence officials suspect Russia could be behind those explosions. Lithuanian and German authorities say there is nothing to suggest an explosion caused today's crash, but that investigations are ongoing. For NPR News, I'm Esme Nicholson in Berlin.

The Dow Jones industrial Average is up 342 points, or roughly three quarters of a percent, at 44,638. This is NPR News. Hundreds of airline service workers, such as wheelchair agents and cabin cleaners at North Carolina's Charlotte Douglas International Airport are on strike over low wages at the start of what's expected to be a record heavy week for Thanksgiving holiday travel. This morning, the the Service Employees International Union announced the work stoppage by employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services. The companies provide staff to American Airlines for various services, including cleaning inside planes and escorting passengers in wheelchairs. According to the Associated Press, ABM says it's taking steps to minimize disruptions. Holiday season is here, and with it comes the feasts. NPR's Regina Barber reports on how some people may be counteracting big meals in unhealthy ways.
Regina Barber
A hospital group in Florida, Orlando Health, recently surveyed over a thousand Americans nationally and found that during the holidays, the tactics to stay healthy might be counterproductive. One in four people surveyed thought it was a good idea to skip meals in preparation of a large holiday feast. Dietitians actually advised people to eat regularly to help people not overeat during one meal. The survey also found that a third of participants felt they needed to detox themselves after overeating. Dietitians stress that that is not needed and could even be harmful because the body's kidneys and livers are experts at doing that detox. Lastly, health professionals say enjoy the holidays. Only eating one healthy meal or one high in calories isn't going to change your health dramatically. Regina Barber, NPR News.
