Live from NPR News in Washington. On Korva Coleman, President elect Donald Trump says he's going to impose tariffs of 25% on Canadian and Mexican goods and an additional 10% on Chinese goods to stop undocumented migrants and illegal drugs from entering the U.S. trump says he'll do it his first day in office. He's also promised to cut government spending using a tool called Impoundment. NPR's Franco Ordonez explains Congress has the.

Power of the purse. It decides how money should be spent. Impoundment is when the president kind of holds back money that Congress has approved for a specific purpose. Trump and his allies argue a president has the right or should have the right to not spend those funds. And that's raising alarm bells across Washington that Trump may be trying to overstep his power.

Franco Ordonez reporting. The Israeli military says it's conducting a large set of airstrikes against terrorist targets in Lebanon's capital, Beirut. This comes as there's word a ceasefire deal between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah may be close, but the deal does not involve Gaza, where Israel is battling Hamas militants. Another winter has arrived in Gaza. NPR producer Anas Bhaba met with Palestinian families on the edge of survival, and NPR's E.A. batrawi prepared this report.

The flimsy tents here, made out of some wood and used food aid bags, are no match for the Mediterranean Sea's lashing winds and tide. While some families in Gaza survived the grueling summer on the water's edge like this, the oncoming winter is simply unbearable. Nidal Abdel Khattati says his children erupted into screams at night, their bedsheets, and even they were being swept out to see by waves. Where are our human rights? He says aid groups say over a million people urgently need kits for adequate tents and shelter for the winter. But UN Agencies note people are starving with not even enough food. In Pakistan, tens of thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan have marched into the capital to demand his release from jail. Omkar Kandekar reports the army is responding to the unrest.
Omkar Kandekar
Protesters across Pakistan marched into Islamabad in response to a call by the former prime minister, Imran Khan. Police fired tear gas and blocked roads with shipping containers. Protesters responded by pelting stones and climbing over the barricades. A spokesman for Khan's party said police killed one person and arrested thousands of their members. The prime minister, Shahbaz Sharif, called the protesters extremists and deployed the army in the capital. Journalists also report they have been surrounded and attacked by Khan supporters, and some had their equipment smashed or stolen. For NPR News, I'm Omgar Khandekar in Mumbai.
