It wasn't much of a Thanksgiving for three commercial turkey farms near London, Ontario. Dan Karpenschuk reports. A highly contagious version of avian flu continues to spread in the region.

Officials with the Canadian Food Inspection agency say the H4N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza has been identified on three properties. The first infection was found nearly two weeks ago, with subsequent infections identified Monday and Wednesday of this week. At least 47,000 turkeys are now affected. Officials have set up a primary control zone around the region to prevent the spread of the virus. A permit is needed to move birds or their byproduct in the area. Officials say the infected birds will be destroyed and properties monitored. They say the common source of spread in the region is through migratory birds. For NPR News, I'm Dan Karpenschuk in Toronto.

In his announcement, Macron said he wanted to boost France's defense capabilities with Russia's war in Ukraine putting the entire European continent at great risk. With 200,000 active forces, France currently has the second largest military in the European Union, just behind Poland. The plan to increase the number of forces comes just a week after France's new army chief of staff warned that the country needed to be prepared to, quote, lose its children in the event of a potential conflict with Russia, words that were met with widespread backlash in France. For NPR News, I'm Rebecca Rossman in Paris.
