Details@Capital1.com live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Nora Ramm. The United nations is urging Washington to allow in asylum seekers. It comes after the President Trump vowed to freeze migration from what he called the third world. NPR's Dia Hadid reports.

TRUMP vowed to halt migration from poor countries after an Afghan national shot two National Guard members in the capital. One National Guard member died of her injuries. The other is in a critical condition. The UN Human Rights Office spokesman, Jeremy Lawrence, said that asylum seekers were entitled to protection under international law and that they should be given due process. The administration also announced it was pausing migration applications filed by Afghan nationals. But even before the Washington attack, advocates for Afghan migrants say the Trump administration said it would re interview some refugees admitted under the former president Joe Biden. The administration also limited the number of refugees it allows into the US Every year, with priority given to white South Africans. Deirhad NPR News, Mumbai.

A daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma has resigned from her role as an opposition member of parliament amid a scandal involving the sending of mercenaries to Russia. Kate Bartlett reports 17 South Africans are pleading to be brought home.

Dudizele Zimbudla Zuma resigned from the party Friday amid allegations from her own half sister she had trafficked South Africans to Russia. Sambudla Zuma denies the charges, saying she, too, was duped by a recruiter. She claims she thought the men were being sent to Russia to train as bodyguards and return to work for her political party. Earlier this month, the men contacted the South African government, saying they were on the front lines in Donbas, Ukraine, and begging to be repatriated. The government says it's working with the Russians and Ukrainians to get the men back, and a police investigation has been launched. NPR has seen terrified WhatsApp messages from the men saying they had no idea they were going to be fighting in a war. Kate Bartlett, NPR News, Johannesburg.

Today is Black Friday, their traditional start to the holiday shopping season, which retailers hope will put them in the black for the year. The National Retail Federation expects sales to top $1 trillion for the first time, but a recent report from the conference board finds consumer confidence has fallen. NPR's Alina Selyuk explains the key here.

Is who's doing the shopping. Most of the spending has been propped up by wealthier people, while others are trying to tighten their budgets. So you see these two things happening at the same time. You see discount stores like TJ Maxx and Dollar General doing really well, but so is Coach on the higher end and Ralph Lauren, which is luxury.

NPR's Alina Selyuk reporting. Stocks rose today in a shortened session. All the major indexes gain ground. This is NPR News in Washington. The death toll continues to rise in Hong Kong, where a major fire swept through a high rise apartment complex Wednesday. Officials now say at least 128 people died and that number could rise. About 200 people are missing. So far, 11 people have been arrested in connection with the fire. Americans and other non European visitors to the Louvre can expect a pro price hike starting next year as the world's most visited museum is looking to help finance a major renovation. Rebecca Rosman has more.

Starting in January, most visitors from outside the European Union should be prepared to shell out $37 for an entry ticket to the Louvre, up from the current $25 rate. The funds from the increase will go towards helping with a major six year renovation project. The urgency of renovations were exposed last month when four robbers took off with $102 million worth of crown, which have still not been recovered. Last week, the museum said it would install 100 external cameras by the end of 2026. The renovations also include a new entrance, which will make it easier to get in and out of the museum, and a special room to host its star attraction, the Mona Lisa. For NPR News, I'm Rebecca Rossman.

In Paris, the Grand ole Opry turned 100 today. The country music radio broadcast debuted on this date in 1925 in Nashville, Tennessee. It launched the careers of some of the big stars, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline. It's where Johnny Cash met June Carter. It's still one of the longest running radio broadcasts in U.S. history. I'm Nora Ramm, NPR News.
