Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Louise Schiavone. President Trump on Thanksgiving Day announced the death of US Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, gunned down in an ambush along with a fellow West Virginia National Guardsman. Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe Wolf remains in critical condition. An Afghan asylee who authorities charge had driven across country to Washington, D.C. for the attack is now facing first degree murder charges. At a memorial service in Webster Springs, West Virginia, Beckstrom's hometown, the National Guard member was remembered with love and great sadness. State Senator Robby Morris says it's been.

A shock, the loss that we are all feeling, the anger, the devastation. It's a lot. There's never a good time for something like this to happen. But it seems to hit harder around the holidays.

Sarah Beckstrom was 20 years old. Investigators are still searching for a motive for the attack. In the wake of the shooting, the Trump administration has halted all asylum decisions and paused issuing visas for people traveling on Afghan passports. At least 121 people are dead after a massive fire in a public housing complex in Hong Kong. Reporter Charisse Pham says more arrests have been made in a corruption probe linked to the fire.

This is one of the deadliest fires in Hong Kong's history. It took more than 40 hours to extinguish. Government officials said temperatures on some floors were still too hot for rescuers to enter, warning that the death toll could climb even higher. The the apartment complex had been under renovation and police said construction material at the site was not up to standard. The fire alarms were also not working properly when the fire broke out. According to Hong Kong's director of fire services. Officials have launched a corruption probe into the renovation project, leading to the arrest of eight people on Friday. That's on top of three people from a construction company arrested on Thursday. For NPR News, I'm Charisse Pham.

In Hong Kong, holiday shopping season off to a start with Black Friday expected to be the busiest day for stores. But lots of people have been browsing from their phones. Online spending data shows a record amount of purchases Thanksgiving Day. NPR's Alina Selyuk reports.

Adobe analytics tracks online transactions and says people on Thanksgiving spent $6.4 billion, which is an increase of more than 5% from last year and compared to last year, more shopping happened before the dinner table rather than afterward. Part of it is thanks to retailers rolling out some of the deepest discounts earlier than expected. Adobe notes a big uptick in purchases for the home on Thanksgiving, including refrigerators and freezers, exercise equipment, speaker systems, TVs and home security products. Among top selling toys, Adobe names squishmallows, Miss Rachel Learning toys, Pokemon trading cards, and a lot of the classics like Fisher Price, little People, Legos and Hot Wheels. This is npr. An Israeli raid on a village in southern Syria has left at least 13 people dead. Syria's Foreign Ministry says women and children are among the dead. Israel says its troops were rounding up suspects from a militant group when they came under attack and subsequently returned fire. Americans and other non European visitors to the Louvre can expect a price hike starting next year as the world's most visited museum seeks to finance a major renovation. Rebecca Rossman has more.
Rebecca Rossman
Starting in January, most visitors from outside the European Union should be prepared to shell out $37 for an entry ticket to the Louvre, up from the current $25 rate. The funds from the increase will go towards helping with a major six year renovation project. The urgency of renovations were exposed last month when four robbers took off with $102 million worth of crown jewels, which have still not been recovered. Last week, the museum said it would install 100 external cameras by the end of 2026. Also include a new entrance, which will make it easier to get in and out of the museum, and a special room to host its star attraction, the Mona Lisa. For NPR News, I'm Rebecca Rossman in Paris.

Parisian authorities believe they now have in custody the four people who executed the broad daylight robbery of crown jewels from the Louvre last month. The last of the four was apprehended a few days ago. Police say he has a record that includes six criminal convictions, including he's facing new charges of robbery by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy. I'm Luis Schiavone, NPR News, Washington.
