Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Giles Snyder. Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have lost two main sources of food over the past 24 hours. The United nations agency for Palestinian refugees is HAL aid deliveries through the main cargo crossing into Gaza because of looting by armed gangs. And the charity World Central Kitchen says it's again pausing operations in Gaza after an Israeli airstrike hit one of its vehicles this weekend. The Israeli military says a Hamas militant was traveling in the vehicle at the time. Gaza's health ministry says at least five people in total, including three aid workers, were killed. As Villa Marx reports.

In a statement, World Central Kitchen said its organization was heartbroken, but that it was working with incomplete information and urgently seeking more details. The Israeli military said a Hamas operative previously under intelligence surveillance had been in the vehicle and it was only fired upon after credible information indicated he was inside it. The military said the man, Hazmi Kadi, had taken part in the attack on a kibbutz close to Gaza last October, and Israeli authorities were now demanding details from the charity about its hiring practices. World Central Kitchen said it had, quote, no knowledge that anyone in the vehicle had alleged ties to the October 7th attacks. For NPR News, I'm Willem Marks.

The Syrian army says it's strengthening its defensive lines, preparing a counterattack against the rebel forces that have captured Aleppo. Russia has reportedly carried out a series of airstrikes as the Islamist rebels continue to advance south on the road toward Hama. The BBC's Lina Sinjab reports. A foreign minister of Iran, Syria's closest ally, is due in Syria today to discuss the crisis.
Lina Sinjab
This is the first time in years that we see the opposition advancing and capturing a big city. And it's also the government by surprise at a time where both its allies are busy. Russia is busy in Ukraine, and Hezbollah and Iran are weakened by Israeli attacks both in Syria and Lebanon. So it's definitely changing the dynamics on the ground. And there are lots of diplomatic movements to discuss the situation and find a way to stabilize it.

President Elect Donald Trump has selected longtime ally Kash Patel to lead the FBI, even though the current director, Christopher Wray's 10 year term does not end 2027. NPR's Windsor Johnston has more on Patel's background.

Patel has been an outspoken critic of the FBI the former prosecutor and public defender has called for shutting down the agency's Washington, D.C. headquarters and firing its top leadership. If confirmed, Patel would replace current FBI Director Christopher Wray, who has three years remaining in his 10 year term. Wray would have to resign or be fired to cre create a vacancy.

Trump also says he's nominating Hillsborough County, Florida Sheriff Chad Chronister to head the Drug Enforcement Agency. This is NPR News. China is protesting a visit to Hawaii by Taiwan. President Lai Ching De Lai arrived in Honolulu yesterday for a two day visit that is officially a stopover on the way to a tour of three Pacific island nations. China claims Taiwan as its territory. Beijing says it has complained to Washington for arranging Lai's transit it through US Territory, saying it has lodged stern representations. Voters in Romania going to the polls today in a parliamentary election amid uncertainty over last week's presidential race in which a far right candidate won the most votes in the first round. The campaign has been dominated by voter concerns over the budget and the cost of living. Hollywood is having a stellar Thanksgiving holiday weekend, as NPR's Bob Mondello reports.

In the trade, they call it over indexing, everything is doing better than it's supposed to. Last week, Disney was predicting that Moana 2 might post a record breaking $135 million over the holiday weekend. Moana, it has already sailed past that number and is now expected to earn up to 220 million. Wicked was expected to drop substantially when Moana started competing for the same audience of women and girls. Instead, it is up slightly. Gladiator 2 is plugging along in third place at a pace that would normally have at lead. And this rising tide is lifting all boats. The entertainment industry news site Deadline is reporting that the total for all films this weekend will exceed the previous Thanksgiving holiday record by roughly $100 million. Food Aid Blocked and Aid Workers Targeted
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are experiencing a severe shortage of food as two primary supply sources have been halted in the last 24 hours. The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees has suspended aid deliveries through the main cargo crossing into Gaza due to looting by armed gangs. Additionally, the charity World Central Kitchen has paused its operations following an Israeli airstrike that targeted one of its vehicles over the weekend.
The Israeli military has stated that a Hamas militant was traveling in the vehicle at the time of the strike. Gaza's health ministry reported that at least five individuals, including three aid workers, were killed in the incident. Willem Marks from NPR elaborates:
"In a statement, World Central Kitchen said its organization was heartbroken, but that it was working with incomplete information and urgently seeking more details." [00:57]
The Israeli military further explained that the vehicle contained Hazmi Kadi, a Hamas operative involved in the October attack on a kibbutz near Gaza. They are now requesting detailed information from World Central Kitchen regarding its hiring practices. The charity maintains it had no knowledge of any ties between the vehicle's occupants and the October 7th attacks.
Syrian Army Strengthens Defenses Amid Rebel Advances
The Syrian army is bolstering its defensive lines in preparation for a counterattack against rebel forces that have seized control of Aleppo. Concurrently, Russia has conducted a series of airstrikes as Islamist rebel groups continue their southward push toward Hama. The BBC's Lina Sinjab provides insight into the shifting dynamics:
"This is the first time in years that we see the opposition advancing and capturing a big city. And it's also the government by surprise at a time where both its allies are busy." [01:54]
She highlights that Syria's key allies, Russia and Iran, are currently preoccupied—Russia with its involvement in Ukraine, and Iran alongside Hezbollah weakened by Israeli attacks in Syria and Lebanon. This shift has altered the battlefield landscape, prompting increased diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
Iran's foreign minister, Syria's closest ally, is scheduled to visit Syria to discuss the ongoing crisis, signaling the importance of international dialogue in addressing the conflict.
Donald Trump's Controversial Nominations
President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to appoint longtime ally Kash Patel to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This move is controversial as the current FBI Director, Christopher Wray, has three years remaining in his 10-year term. NPR's Windsor Johnston reports on Patel's background:
"Patel has been an outspoken critic of the FBI; the former prosecutor and public defender has called for shutting down the agency's Washington, D.C. headquarters and firing its top leadership." [02:38]
If confirmed, Patel would replace Wray, necessitating the latter's resignation or dismissal to create the vacancy.
In a related development, Trump has also nominated Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). These nominations reflect Trump's intent to place allies in key federal law enforcement positions, despite ongoing term considerations.
Diplomatic Tensions Rise Over Taiwan's Transit
China has lodged a formal protest against Taiwanese President Lai Ching De Lai's visit to Hawaii. The visit, officially a stopover en route to a tour of three Pacific island nations, has sparked Beijing's ire as it claims Taiwan as its territory. According to NPR's Giles Snyder:
"China claims Taiwan as its territory. Beijing says it has complained to Washington for arranging Lai's transit it through US Territory, saying it has lodged stern representations." [03:07]
The Chinese government views the transit as a challenge to its sovereignty claims over Taiwan, leading to heightened diplomatic tensions between China and the United States. This incident underscores the fragile state of cross-strait relations and the broader geopolitical implications of Taiwan's international engagements.
Parliamentary Elections in a Precarious Political Climate
Romanian voters are casting their ballots in a parliamentary election, taking place against the backdrop of uncertainty following last week's presidential race. A far-right candidate secured the most votes in the first round, intensifying concerns about the country's political direction. Key issues dominating the campaign include:
The outcome of these elections will play a crucial role in shaping Romania's political landscape, particularly in addressing the immediate economic challenges facing the nation.
Box Office Soars Beyond Expectations
The entertainment industry is enjoying a remarkable Thanksgiving holiday weekend, with all films exceeding box office projections. NPR's Bob Mondello reports:
"In the trade, they call it over indexing, everything is doing better than it's supposed to." [04:05]
This surge in ticket sales indicates a robust recovery for Hollywood, with the current lineup attracting diverse audiences and setting new benchmarks for holiday earnings.
