Details@Capital1.com Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. Lawmakers received new details today about a September strike on survivors aboard an alleged drug boat in the Caribbean. The members saw video of the strike and questioned Navy Admiral Frank Bradley, special operations commander who oversaw the operation. NPR's Sam Greenglass reports.
Jim Himes / Tom Cotton
The video was shown to the top Republicans and Democrats on the Intelligence and Armed Services Committees. Representative Jim Himes, the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, said the video of the strike showed two individuals on a largely destroyed vessel, which he says violates the laws of armed conflict.
Lawmakers / Commentators
What I saw in that room was one of the most troubling things I've seen in my time in public service.
Jim Himes / Tom Cotton
Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Republican Tom Cotton said he did not believe the second strike was illegal.
Lawmakers / Commentators
I didn't see anything disturbing about it. What's disturbing to me is that millions of Americans have died from drugs being run to America by these cartels.
Jim Himes / Tom Cotton
President Trump told reporters he would be willing to release video of the strike. Sam Greenglass, NPR News, Washington.

The Trump administration is reducing the validity of work permits for some immigrants. NPR's Sergio Martinez Beltran reports that as of tomorrow, work permits will only be valid for 18 months.
Sergio Martinez Beltran
Work permits have been valid for five years, so this is a significant change. It applies to immigrants who have been admitted as refugees, have been granted asylum, or have been granted or have a pending withholding of deportation or removal. USCIS Director Joseph Edlow says the changes to the validity of work permits will ensure that those seeking work in the United States do not threaten public safety or promote harmful anti American ideologies. The announcement comes in response to the shooting of two National Guard members last week in Washington, D.C. one of them died. The alleged shooter is an Afghan national who was granted asylum in April. Sergio Martinez Beltran, NPR News, Austin.

Democratic lawmakers are quizzing businesses that reportedly have made donations to President Trump's planned ballroom. NPR's Scott Horsley reports. Lawmakers want to know if the company's got anything in return from the government.
Lawmakers / Commentators
Lawmakers have written to more than half a dozen big companies, including Amazon, Microsoft and Union Pacific Railroad, asking how much they donated to the ballroom and whether there was any discussion of a quid pro quo. All the companies that received letters have antitrust matters pending with the administration, which the lawmakers say raises questions about the possibility of influence peddling. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon says his company chose not to make a donation to avoid the appearance of buying favors. So far, there's been little oversight of the giant White House ballroom or its price tag, which has grown to $300 million. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

Britain is sanctioning Russia's GRU intelligence agency and summoning Moscow's ambassador after an inquiry concluded that President Vladimir Putin was responsible for a nerve agent attack on British soil in 2018. The government says Russia targeted a former Soviet agent who defected to Britain. A British woman died after coming into contact with the nerve agent. The Vatican released a report today saying that the Catholic Church should not ordain women as Deacons. As NPR's Sarah Ventri reports, deacons assist priests, can baptize, witness marriages and preside at funerals.
Sarah Ventri
The commission was originally set up by Pope Francis to examine the possibility of allowing women to serve as deacons. The group included both men and women, and the report cited arguments both for and against. Elie Hidalgo is with the group Discerning Deacons. This report doesn't actually change what's happening on the ground, but it is a call for us to continue to make visible how women are already responding to the Holy Spirit's call to ministry. The report also says there is a need to create new lay ministries for women. Now it's up to Pope Leo to decide the church's next steps, which could include more discussion and discernment. Sarah Ventri, NPR News.

After six days monitoring the bowel movements of a man accused of swallowing a 19,000 Faberge egg, new Zealand police have recovered it by natural means. The 32 year old man allegedly ate the pendant inspired by the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy. Central to the film's plot is a jewel smuggling operation that involves a fake Faberge egg.
