Duahli Sai Kowtow
NPR News in New York City, I'm Duahli Sai Kowtow. Incoming US Presidents are eager to start putting their policies in place, but they're usually restrained by the long standing PR of one president at a time. As NPR's Greg Myriad notes, President Elect Trump is already declaring policies that differ from those of President Biden.
Greg Myriad
Trump took to social media and demanded the Palestinian group Hamas release Israeli hostages before he sworn in on January 20th. If they aren't freed, Trump said, there will be, quote, hell to pay. Princeton historian Julian Zelizer says this aggressive approach could produce a breakthrough or undermine efforts by President Biden.
Julian Zelizer
If his doing this somehow moves unmovable leaders on issues, that would be a good thing, but we don't know if it will work out that way. He obviously could also end up subverting Biden.
Greg Myriad
Trump has also threatened tariffs on Canada and Mexico, prompting leaders of those nations to reach out and seek clarification. Greg Myriad, NPR News, Washington.

Economist Peter Navarro is President Elect Donald Trump's pick to serve as a senior counselor for trade and manufacturing. The 75 year old is a Trump loyalist who spent time in prison for contempt of Congress. As NPR Scott Horsley reports.
Scott Horsley
Navarro is a trade hardliner and a fierce critic of China who's served as an advisor to Trump since his first presidential campaign. In a social media post, Trump said few people were more effective or tenacious during his first term in office at promoting Buy American and Higher American policies. Navarro later wrote a book in which he described efforts to overturn Trump's loss in the 2020 election through a maneuver he called the Green Bay Sweep. Navarro refused to testify about the plot before the congressional committee investigating the January 6th attack on the Capitol. He served four months federal prison for defying the committee's subpoena and was released just in time to address the Republican National Convention. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

Not since 1962 has France voted to remove its prime minister. But Wednesday's no confidence vote in France's national legislature was an historic one, 331 against Michelle Balnier. This is NPR News. Protesters returned to the streets of South Korea's capital to demand the resignation of President Yoon Suk Yeol. Many are angry that Yoon announced martial law on Tuesday. Then Wednesday, opposition parties quickly voted to cancel martial law. Yonhap News reports that the main Democratic Party plans for a vote for an impeachment motion in Parliament this Saturday. UN's Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun has now resigned. The three star general was a close ally to Yun and has been criticized for ordering the deployment of troops to Parliament. Ice hockey players are at greater risk of developing the degenerative brain disease known as CTE the longer they play the sport. Sport. That's the conclusion of a new study that is the first of its size to look specifically at hockey. As NPR's Becky Sullivan reports, researchers at.
Becky Sullivan
Boston University have long studied the brains of former football players to draw conclusions about cte, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Until now, they'd never had enough postmortem donations from hockey players to do the same for that sport. The new study looks at 77 brains from deceased hockey players from all levels, from youth to professionals. And like in football, it found an athlete's risk increased the longer their career, says co op Dr. Jesse Mez.
Julian Zelizer
We found that with each additional year of play, the odds of having CTE increased by 34%.
Becky Sullivan
